Talking NATASHA - The 54r DMR Build*

History: I have grown bored of the .223 round and wanted a large caliber at a reasonable price to shoot weekly. That left me with one option, go purchase a Mosin and a spam can of 7.62x54r and have fun! I never thought I would buy foreign, especially russian weapons, but dang I am glad I did... Some great quality firearms and the 54r is a BLAST to shoot! After about 40-60rds you feel it for the next day or two in your shoulder, so I decided I needed to find mysellf a Semi-Auto 54r to replace the Mosin and my RRA AR-15. The search led me to two options; SVT-40 WWII rifle or the new-age VEPR 54r. I went with the VEPR for many reasons including RPK receiver, chrome lined barrel, easier magazine options, etc... So, now here I am building my "Russian .30-06" DMR - which may end up being a BR as I originally wanted.

I purchased the 20.5" model with integrated sights on the gas block and am extremely pleased! A monopoly is unfolding with CenterfireSystems, as they are the only VEPR importer now and have cranked the prices up high! I managed to pick up one with unfinished wood for $300 less, I planned on swapping all furniture out anyway, but the waiting game sucks. I have already taken it to the range and WOAH is the recoil much more manageable, loud, sexy, accurate...

This is how she sits now:

VEPR 54r-DMR Build (Natasha) - If anyone needs some firewood VEPR furniture that they are good with finishing I am selling both pieces, I have sanded it down a little bit to be able to go the range without roughing up your hands...

    I have already received:

    Scope - 4-16x50mm Millet

    Stock - MagPul CTR + .77" pad + .50" riser

    Waiting for:

    Grip - Ronin's Grips

    Handguard - Ronin's Grips

Mil-Spec AK to AR foldable buffer tube - Bonesteel

    Flash Hider - Unsure Type

A quick clip of the first range day, this rifle + that scope = tac driver! I went out to 100yds and got it sighted in (roughly) I need to attach a bi-pod after the hand guard arrives and then have a more stable firing position. About 12 casings ejected up into the windage knob, back into the receiver, and then onto the ground. I had no idea untill I got home that it was doing that, but it held zero the whole time. I have since moved the scope forward about an inch for better eye relief and hopefully the casings wont hit it anymore, if they do on the next outing I will have one sweet scope for sale and making her a 54r BR as originally stated.

I am Pretty dang excieted to get this finished! Who wouldn't be excited about a 2800fps "Russian .30-06" DMR at .20/rd?! All the parts have been ordered and shipping has begun, when they arrive it will look close to this... (Bad Photo ChopShop)[/B]

So, while I wait for the rest of the furniture to arrive and growing tired of waiting for SGM to "perfect" a double-stack 15 and 20rd box magazine, I have ordered a 63rd DT Drum magazine that I will be trying to convert into the VEPR magwell and to feed properly.

You're gonna need more ammo, with 15 63rd drums there.

Nice-looking little pea shooter. Just what a person needs for home defense. Enjoy the "tack driving." Looks like a winner.

I sure didn't buy 15 of them suckers, but one will keep me happy for a while. Quite the pea-shooter indeed! I used the "tack driver" wordage since I am as accurate with it at 100yds as my AR was. I am very pleased. :)

    Nice!

Looks like a hoot to shoot. Probably the only gun you can get ammo for right now too...

How is the trigger and what size groups at 100 yds?

I am not an awesome shot, but after somewhat "zeroing" the scope in, I got consistent 3in groups at 100yds. If I could get a bench rest or sand bags it would be better. This was standing with the handguard resting on a packed tent sack.

    Update on "Natasha the 54R-BR"

Ronin's Grips have arrived, took quite some modification. Looks awesome and feels great though! Just waiting on left-side folder square/back mil-spec tube stock. (Bonesteel)

Those new VEPRs are gorgeous and apparently shoot very well. They are the only AKs I'll pay $1k for. The 16" .308 really has my interest. It strikes me as easily converted to, say, 7mm-08 or 260 Rem?

Looking forward to updates TopGun. Do you handload for 54R by chance? I've always been curious what the cartridge is capable of.

63 rounds of 7.62x54r is an absolutely gratuitous amount of firepower.

    ...I like it.

I am selling this EoTech Replica as we speak via auction, so I decided to slap it on Natasha to see how it felt and looked... Still waiting on Bonesteel Left-Side-Folder tube.

Today on 06/11/13 I had hoped to have "Natasha the 54r DMR" completed with the addition of the last part's arrival...

The BoneSteel left-side side folder looks and feels great, btu the isse with having a left fold on an AK with a side-rail mount is that the fold to left function is almost pointless as when you fold the stock it does not fold to the side of the body, but sticks out at a 20* angle and is cumbersome.

This problem was discovered after the installation of the stock and after the fact that I realized I can no longer use my side-rail mount for the VEPR since I cannot slide it past the knuckle the stock hinges on. The stock has to be removed in order to do this. At the same time, I also realized that the entire scope and rail assembly along with the stock needs to be removed each time I want to clean the gun and disassemble it, due to the tolerances being to tight.

I then took the stock back off, took the scope and rail off and re-installed the stock to be able to use the weapon properly and go to the range today. I might have to see just how accurate I can be with this rifle without an optic. If I must have the optic, then the BoneSteel Left-Side folder will be For Sale and I will purchase a fixed mil-spec tube stock and find a high profile VEPR side-rail.

Without further adieu, I present to you "Natasha the 54r BR" as she currently sits, I do love her in this form and simplicity and practicality for a BR use. We shall see how I do with her in this setup, what kind of group can I expect at 100yds with the Irons as a moderately skilled shooter?
