    Question about MI Law....folding stocks

In the near future I would like to purchase a KelTec SUB2000. However I was reading through the MI firearm laws and it looks as if I may not be able to purchase it in MI. How would you guys interpret this...

    Gun Info

    Length Open - 29.5"
    Length Collapsed - 16"
    Barrel Length - 16.1"

    MI Law

" Do rifles or shotguns with collapsible/folding stocks have to be registered in Michigan?

MCL 750.222 Yes, provided the rifle or shotgun is 30 inches or less in overall length with the stock collapsed/folded but at least 26 inches and the barrel length is at least 16 inches and 18 inches respectively. Attorney General's opinion #6280: if the firearm is less than 26 inches in overall length or the barrel is less than 16 or 18 inches respectively, the firearm is considered a short-barreled rifle or shotgun and is illegal to possess. MCL 750.224d There is an exception for short-barreled shotguns and short-barreled rifles which the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has found to be a curio, relic, antique, museum piece, or collector's item not likely to be used as a weapon.

The possessor must comply with Section 2 (License to Purchase) and Section 9 (Safety Inspection Certificate/registration) of Act 372."

    Stor...

Hey, my son and his family live in MP...he works at the casino...

I also would wonder (I've been in FL for 6 years) if I were visiting, as in a month long camping trip this summer...would I have a problem bringing my 12ga coach gun or my BushMaster AR-15? I can't believe it would be illegal...but there are states with stranger laws.

Any Michiganders with MI weapons law knowledge?

    Stay alert...stay safe!

I am pretty sure the AR is legal as they sell them at the gun stores around here.

Here is my opinion. Please remember it is free and you get what you pay for. I spoke to a FFL dealer a few years ago about a similar gun.

The important thing about the length is, will gun fire in that configuration? Looking at the KelTec Sub 2000 in its collapsed position I think it would be considered taken down, it does not appear it will fire. But it is still less than 30 inches assembled so it will have to be registered (Safety Inspection) as a pistol.

Just like the law says. 26" minimun & 16 " barrel min. on a rifle in MI. This is why AR's have to have 16" barrels instead of the Mil spec 14" .
If it is less than 26" and functions , it may be able to be registered as a pistol(not sure of this). As of yet, SBR's are not legal in MI.
NOTE: I am NOT a lawyer , nor do I play 1 on T.V. When in doubt contact the MSP, A.G. of MI or the ATF.

You live in Wayne, I grew up in Dearborn! My question was about the length of a shotgun (20" bbl on a coach gun...or the AR-15 w/16" bbl)...while only visiting MI I must conform to MI CCW laws, but I don't have to register anything because I'm a resident of FL...correct?

Also if they sell these things in MI, I should have no problem having them with me.
