12 Gauge Dummy Rounds - What Do You Use?

    Hey y'all,

I'm looking for some good dummy rounds for a 12 Gauge that I could purchase for my mother. She has a new Remington 870 that she isn't familiar with and, honestly, a bit afraid of. My step-father bought it for her a few months ago, and she still has not gone to the range or received any training. Being that she's in KS and I'm in GA, I can't exactly pick her up and take her to the range to give her a lesson. My younger brother gave her a quick demonstration on function and loading a while back, but it was very much a quick demonstration and not a lesson. She says that right now the gun just sits in its case under her bed and the shells in a dresser drawer, and she rarely touches it. We've decided that I'm going to just give her some basic lessons over Skype on how the gun functions and the basic operation of it but, naturally, I don't want her loading and unloading several rounds of live buck shot in her kitchen. Especially when she doesn't know what she's doing and I'm not physically present.

That all being said, what do you use for dummy rounds (not just snap caps) that will cycle through a pump just fine, and that she can use to practice loading and then "firing" through a couple rounds to get the action down?

I did a quick search online, but most of what I came up with had terrible reviews due to either poor quality or inability to cycle through a pump.

    Suggestions?

I bought snap caps, but admit I have not used them yet. Only time I did was to practice, unloading, not cycling.

I'd also be interested in the answer to this one.

If you, or someone else, reloads shotgun shells. Just load some empties with shot instead of powder, wad and shot. Leave the old primer in. They will last almost as long as a high priced dummy round....

Now that is a good idea.

The A-Zoom snap caps I use in my O/U cycle just fine in the 870. I like 'em because they are about the same weight as a round of buckshot. They're not cheap, but they function just fine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into both those possibilities. There is a press setup and ready to reload shot shells in a back room at the club house, so my boss might be able to help me with that tomorrow. If not, the A-Zooms sound like a great idea.

I just got a set of ST Action Pro 12 ga dummies, haven't tried them yet. I like their other ones though.

Well, you should get off the computer and go try those out real quick for me!

A quick look at their website says they're cheap, so if they work just fine through a pump, I might have to grab a few. I think something orange like that might be great for my mom so she doesn't have to worry about getting them mixed up with live ammo.

To Be honest she needs to call an instructor to walk her through everything from gun safety to loading and firing until she becomes comfortable with the operation, otherwise if there is a scumbag that breaks in before she can effectively deploy the shotgun he may end up with it

Doesn't answer my question at all. And I'm well aware of this. I have told her this as well. Really she needs my Brother-in-Law to teach her (a lot cheaper than hiring an instructor). He's a LEO out in KS and along with that has been hunting every kind of Kansas game practically his whole life.

But all I can do is remind her. The rest is up to her.

UNTIL THEN...Sending her some dummy rounds so we can go over loading and unloading and etc. together (over skype) will be just fine to help her build a little confidence.

I like this idea the best. I understand you are trying to teach the basics without being there. But an hour or two with a professional trainer will do wonders for her confidence.
