What's happening with the Ruger Mini-14?

Yes, I know firearm prices, especially AR's have gone stupid up. However, I notice in the last month or two that they have come crashing down, as in, cheaper than a year or two ago. However, the Mini's are through the roof. Two years ago you could pick up a Mini 14 in excellent condition for $500 or less. Good luck with that. Seems like the start at $700 and move up. One guy on Gunbroker has a starting price of $850 with "Reserve not met" in the corner. Are you kidding me!?

I picked up a 1983 mini 14 stainless ranch model for 600 bucks in great condition.

    I love that gun.

AK's are still high too. Give it time, things will settle.

Its all about supply and demand.

When the demand exceeds the supply, prices go up.
When the supply exceeds the demand prices go down.

The Ruger Mini 14's have always been hard to get and there just isn't a whole lot of the newer versions to go around. For that reason, the price will stay high. I'd like to think that at some point they might come down, but it not one of their main staples, so I doubt that they'll ever be plentiful.

I can't fathom why anyone would pay AR money for a Mini-14. Makes me wish I still had mine now, I'd be selling it again!

I have a 182 series I bought in the early 1980s for $189.95; maybe I should sell it for a nice profit, Nah never happen.

You bet, Master Sergeant, and I want to take it off your hands and, yet, give you the over the top price of $200!

Step over here and I'll count you out an honest $255 in fresh, crisp bills...

I paid $900 last December for a 186 series stainless Mini-14 with a Hogue overmoulded stock, muzzle flash hider, B-Square scope mount, a five round mag, a ten round mag, four 20 round mags and a dual long gun hard case. I've periodically looked at availability on Armslist and Gunbroker and I still feel like I got a fair deal, just not a great one.

You couldn't give me an ar for serious social engagements. The mini's [ 14 and 30's ] are much more reliable and less finicky. If you're the type that needs a tinker toy and tons of options available you'll go with the ar. If you aren't, a basic mini 14/30 with GG+G mount with eotech is far better in a SHTF scneario. I keep the mini30 with eotech at the ready, the ar is nothing but a toy for others to play with while I train with my mini30. The mini's are worth every penny you'd pay for an ar.
