Trouble with the most important decision for my new AR build.

OK I know it's not THE most important decision in an AR build, but I just bought my first stripped lower and I'm having trouble deciding if I should go with a FDE build or stick with the evil black rifle look. What do you guys think?

What do I think? I think it's your build, do what you want. Though it seems more reasonable to pick what you want on it, and if something is only available as one or the other then take it as a Sign.

Seriously, if you can't pick the color then perhaps building an AR isn't for you. There are about 400 other decisions you're going to have to make before it's done.

Pick a color and move on........seriously, flip a coin if you have to.

I'd think this would be the easiest decision of the build...

That's the problem. I pretty much have an idea of how I want to build the gun and what important features I want. It's similar to my wife asking if she should wear brown shoes or a slightly different shade of brown shoes. I know that as long as the gun functions properly it doesn't really matter what color I pick.

I just thought it would be interesting to see other people's take on it.

I like them black. FDE is a bit played out to me.

    Whatever matches your purse.

It's an AR for crying out loud. Scuff the furniture and focus on the internals.

I go with black then paint it to fit my needs.

I prefer to keep things as simple as possible, so if it were my build, I'd go with black. "Evil FDE rifle" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Agree with above - Color wouldn't matter, because it would be painted immediately.

Go with black and then paint it if you want. That way you can do whatever you want to it.

I like a black lower with contrasting furniture. This adds break-up as camouflage - at least in the woods. That's probably the only functional reason I can think of adding color other than just personal taste for what you think looks cool.

The reason for the FDE is a simple one and its been discussed many times.

You can be camouflaged from head to toe and if you are carrying a black gun, that is the first thing that the eye notices.
There are very few places in the woods where black is a natural color. Of course there are bits and pieces of black that are evident in trees and shadows and such, but a weapon really stands out.

The Flat Dark Earth has no such issues at all. Its sort of a neutral color that blends in very well with the typical terrain found here in North America.

So, if that matters to you, go with the FDE. If you don't care, go with black, parts will be easier to find and probably less expensive.
