    Maverick 88?

While looking for a home defense shotgun, I ran across the Maverick 88. Of course the low price immediately got my attention and it greatly appealed to my somewhat tight budget. Basically I’m just wondering if reliability was sacrificed for the low price. Thanks

Hey, it's the same as a Mossy 500. Good gun, great value.

    Get it.

On the Maverick website the 8 shot security model 88 looks identical to my Mossberg 500 Persuader when it was stock. I have never had a single problem with my 500. There is some relationship between the brands, although I'm not sure what, maybe Maverick is just Mossbergs by a different name. Looks like a good deal to me, I'd prolly go for it.

My Maverick 88 says right on it "Maverick by Mossberg." I have had mine since 1999 and have never had any trouble with it. Most of the time it is in the rack, but whenever I have decided to go out and practice with it I justed picked it up and went out to shoot. I dust it every so often and wipe it down and oil it occasionally. Works like new everytime.

IIRC the "Maverick" is Mossberg's value line of pump guns. My son has one and it has been every bit as reliable as my two 500A's.

I don't think you can get a better "new" shotgun for @$150.00.

The Maverick is not the same as the 500.
    Cheaper parts.
Save your pennies and get a used 590 or even better a used Reminton 870.
The 870 is so much smoother than the Mossburgs.

Great basic pump shotgun that the company will stand behind and can be fixed by any smith. Buy it!

My favorite shotgun is my Mossberg 500 I picked up used for $75!

it is a mossberg and they make good shotguns. if you look around you might find an old remington 870 for good price.

I picked up a used (couldn't tell) Maverick 88 for about what dinner for two at a nice restaurant costs. I've put about 30 rounds of Winchester Ranger low recoil 00 Buck through it without a single hiccup. It's action is not as smooth as it's more expensive Mossy brother but it works.

It is what it is, and it's a low end shotgun. There are better out there, 150 sounds a bit high. For a 75 more you can have a 870 hd, a much better buy.

If the maverick is what you want, it aint to bad for the price.

I bought a like new used 88 in the home defense configuration for $120 and it is a serviceable firearm. Since I am just using it as an HD weapon and don't plan on taking it to the range every week, there shouldn't be any durability problems. It's not the only pump shotgun I own, the quality seems to be comparable with the others I have.

I had it explained to me that the 88 would be fine if it was left in a closet and it's only reason for existence was home defense. Durability would not be an issue in this situation.

I shoot my weapons whether they are going to be left in the closet or not. I don't want a home defense weapon that might have suspect durability because I chose to practice with it.

picked up mine at a gun show here last year and put a pistol grip stock on it. Paid 115 out the door, my son wanted a shotgun to learn on and for the money you can't beat it. Sure it isn't a 500 but for casual shooting and home defense you can't beat the price

My friend has used a Maverick for deer hunting for years now. Never a problem with it. I'm thinking about getting one of them for the house.
