The Ruger American without a doubt! The recent manufacturing quality of Rem/Marlin is less than impressive IMO!

I'm not impressed with Marlin either. Don't rule out Savage/Stevens. They have RULED the entry level market with an iron fist because of their quality and accuracy. Ruger/Remington/Mossberg and others are playing catch up to Savage at that price point.
I havenít heard any of the journalists who volunteered to be waterboarded asking to have their fingernails wrenched out with pliers, or electrodes attached to their genitals.

I agree. Savage has a reputation for great accuracy. I own a Model 116 that shot 5/8" 5-shot groups right out of the box. I also have a number of Ruger products that have been great
