A shorter barrel is easy, you just buy one and install, no special tools or skills needed.

For the magazine, you can remove the plug. If you want a longer tube you would have to take it to a gunsmith unless they changed how they make them.

High Capacity Shotgun Kit | Brownells

Bronells has the kit I believe, its about $170 bucks so its better to buy a new 88 hd for $200.

Irc you have to change the mag tube and the barrel

Any 500 tube/barrel fits but you do need a matching mag tube for the barrel

You can saw it off and install a bead sight, a member just did this and it does look good.....

Buy a new gun. Either Rem 870, or Mossberg 590. Start with a good platform.

    I have a Maverick 88 and it's OK.

After firing a Mossberg 500, it beats out the Maverick big time!

As shown above, for the cost of modding your existing gun you can buy a new one.

Mossberg makes a Maverick Model 88 Security Pump Action Shotgun 12 Gauge 3" Chamber 20" Barrel Synthetic Stock Blued Finish 31046 with an 8 shell capacity for $200 from Wal-mart.

Cheaper and easier than converting your existing one.

If more people came to that clear reality, a LOT of companies would be forced to close. Particularly, ones with the word "tactical" in their DBA.

I would as other said just get a HD model 870 or 500 or whatever with a 18.5 inch barrel ready to go .. I know they make 10 round tubes for the 870 heck even drum mags ...

    plus

There are two basic models of the 88, the 88 field and the 88 security. The 88 field comes with a longer 28" vent-rib barrel, whereas the security comes with an 18-1/2" (6 round capacity) or 20" (8 round capacity) non-vent-rib barrel. The 88's have a cartridge capacity of 6 or 8 shots and cannot have their magazines easily extended without machining. The Mossberg Mavericks come with a polyesthic stock and forend.

I have a 88 and LOVE it. Fit and finish isn't what my 870 is BUT it's as reliable and a bunch more cheaper.

IMHO, a standard pump riot shotgun, like the 870 or 500, 12ga, 18 inch barrel is all you really need for SD. The rest of accessories are just fancy cosmetics that cost too much.

You also need to have a LED that stands up to shotgun recoil.
