I finally got to shoot my AK47

I recieved a free range pass from a good friend of mine, so I decided to take my AK47 and my XD45 to the range. All I can say about my AK47, is I will need more mags and more ammo, LOTS of ammo. I shot paper targets @ 25 yards, and managed to get 2-3" groups with the AK. I shot WOLF FMJs and a few HPs through it. I was kind of nervous about shooting HPs through it, because I had heard reports of WASR10s not feeding HPs reliably, but mine did just fine with both.

As for my XD45, all I can say is shooting that thing will get expensive unless I get into reloading ASAP. I managed to get the same groups with it as I did with my AK @ 25 yards. My XD45 has quickly become my favorite pistol to shoot. It had 0 malfunctions.

The biggest prob' with an AK (SKS too) is knowing when to stop .

Ideally that means before the ammo has run out! If you reach a stage where you inflict a serious burn on a hand from a hot barrel - that's about enough too

Pity the ammo has gone thru the roof for price tho.

I had to let my AK cool off as I reloaded the mags. That thing gets hot really quick!

I have never heard of an AK having a malfunction.

I'll take the AK 47 over the AR 15 any day. If the shooter has an AK 47 there is very few places the target canfind cover. Congrats, it sounds like a nice gun.

Shooting massive quantities of even fairly inexpensive ammo gets slightly expensive before too very long.

When you go shoot, take 3 or 4 firearms and limit the ammo to what you can replace that day. If you shoot 200 rnds then go buy 200 rnds after shooting, You will never run out and you never overshoot. When I go out I take only enough for the day, If I shoot it up in 20 min. then the day is over. I like my outings to last so I take a couple of firearms and walk the trails of the mountains and shoot only ocasionally. I try and always have ammo left when I return home.

Walking or hiking with your guns gives you an Idea as to what is comfortable to carry all day, as well as how much ammo you want to carry.

that's the beauty of AK's. not only do they look good, but they fire through water ,sand, mud, even chili mac... (long story) and they just keep on ticking.

Once I get better job, that can actually support my strong passion for guns, I'll stock up on mass quantities of WOLF 7.62x39, and AK mags.

Start stocking now. The price of Wolf 7.62x39 has almosty doubled in the last year and a half and who knows where it will stop. My first 1,000 round batch of 7.62x39 at Sportsman Guide was in the neighborhood of $90. Now it is running up to $170. Ammoman.com is charging $189 delivered which is not bad. I have one batch in backorder from SG since December (at $145 with shipping) and I will be ordering another 1K soon.

As for AK Mags... well, those have come down actually. The last ones I bought (previously owned) were $10 a pop at a gun show. Sportsman Guide has a neat sale right now and you can get the mags for about $7 each. Don't let the "used" term scare you. AK Mags are tough and reliable. Mine came full of car oil & forest debris and after a cursory cleaning, they performed like champs at the range.
