If it is not in the US Constitution then the Federal Government should not be doing it.

The AR, no question. The .223 may be on the wimpy side for a centerfire rifle round, and the .45's a pretty heavy duty handgun round, but the difference between a rifle and a pistol is so great that even a wimpy rifle round is still far better than a powerful handgun round.

Not even in the same ball park. The muzzle energy from a .45 ACP is around 400 ft/lbs, from a 5.56 it's around 1300 ft/lbs. And seeing as the fat, heavy .45 dumps its energy MUCH faster than the pointy, light 5.56 - at 100yds the difference would be even greater.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

The Ar in close are far away.

    Without a doubt, the 5.56.

However, the pistol caliber carbine does offer some advantages as they’re cheaper to practice with and can be used readily at indoor ranges. They also don’t tear up steel targets if you’re working on CQB stuff.
