    Loud Buffer Spring

    Good morning all-

Quick question for the AR guys-

I have a 5.56 AR with a mil-spec buffer tube and spring. I have been noticing the past couple trips to the range that the buffer spring is getting loud...after the bolt compresses the spring and as it pushes the bolt back in battery, I can audibly (through my ear protection) hear the spring reverberating for a couple seconds in the tube. Is this normal? It didn't do it when the rifle was new and at this point there is only 700-800 rounds through it so it is basically still pretty new. Other than the sound it is functioning 100% perfectly.

That was the second thing I noticed about my first M16 back in basic training 42 years ago. The first thing was its surprising lack of recoil.

People will laugh at me, but I reaplced my milspec with a Damage Industries Enhanced recoil spring. I have found it really quiets down the twang. Here is their description. "Significantly reduces the perceived "twang" noise which is common during firing"

I personally love my Damage Industries spring, and you can't beat it either for like $6.

I hate that toy-like twang.... Reminds me of a toy rifle I had as a kid. Now I'm an old kid with the same twang......

I've seen people sleeve the tube part of their buffer tube with foam. It won't stop the spring from twanging, but it will greatly reduced you're hearing of it.

I guess it depends on whether you think if a tree falls in the woods...

I cured the twang on my M-16. I just went Rock and Roll and never heard it .
