There were Snider conversions which converted old muskets into breechloaders.
Most were rifles as far as I know, and the most common was probably the conversion of British P1853 rifled muskets to .577 breechloaders.
Snider was an American, I think, but Snider, and Snider-type conversions were done to rifles in many countries.
In the conversion, the breech area was cut away, and in it's place, a swinging breech block was installed which contained the firing pin and other esssentials along with sealing off the breech.
A search for British military rifles should give you lots of info.
Fantastic Barry! I have been trying to find info on this type of modification for a while. Thanks for the help.
