    Question about K98 Mauser Disassembly

Basically my question is how is this rifle taken apart to clean all the cosmoline. It is for a German K98 if that matters, one with the bolt disassembly disk in the stock. I have been able to get the bolt out of the weapon, and unscrew the baseplate, but the front bands seem to be really stuck on their good, any tips for these?

Also if anyone else just has any random thoughts or useful knowledge about these rifles, such additions are always welcome. Thanks for the help.

So long since I totally stripped a Mauser I forget the details right now but - while I have no link - I seem to recall one or two sites well dedicated to the platform, and within those should be most of what you need.

I'd suggest initially, google for "Mauser K98" - in quotes and see what hits you get. Maybe too "K98 disassembly"

Thanks Chris, I have been googling and not finding much, a lot of chaff in order to find the good stuff on Mauser's apparently. I'll keep tryin though till I find what I need.

Just tried some searches and yeah - bit full of less than useful a lot of them.

I haven't tried but - one or two seem promising links ..

    Thumbs up Hope this helps

With the bolt out, notice a small spring loaded pin on the left hand side of the bolt shroud/gas deflector.Push this in to the rear and at the same time twist left on the shroud (counter clockwise).A few more turns and the striker/firing pin assembly should come out.Reassembly requires you to manually cock the striker before it will go back into place.....You might try a brass punch or a wooden dowel rod to loosen the barrel band, being sure the detent spring on the right side is fully depressed.

Ok, well, after searching for a while I found a great article with pictures at surplusrifle.com

Now I can take it all apart and remove the cosmoline so that I can shoot this puppy (along with my neglect and not yet fired M44) sometime this week.

I bookmarked it, and also threw it in that last post in case someone in the future needs to search for it.

Just had to dig through all those sites of people selling old Nazi stuff.
