I have an SKS that uses stripper clips to load the magazine...I would like to convert to detachable magazines...does anyone know how to do this? or does anyone know of an instructional website....
Anything will help....
Thanks.

I've had several SKSs and tried many expensive mags. The Only ones that work (and they do work well) are the Tapco 20rounders. They can also be altered to accept stripper clips. http://www.tapco.com/proddesc.aspx?I...8-e1f54ed0992d
I've been told that the USA brand ones work well to but they are no longer made and are expensive.
Check out this website for SKS info http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php
and remember that altering an SKS may make it illegal. many where imported as curo and relic and must have enough Compliance Parts if altered to be considered made in the USA

I agree, I'm not a fan of the detachable mags either. I like the SKS, but it's made for 10 rounds and I'm OK with that.
If you want larger capacity, why not just buy an AK style rifle? They're fairly low priced, especially compared to what you pay for an SKS these days.
That said, here's this.
thank you very much...
my intent is to not have to fool with stripper clips when loading...not so much mag capacity.
At the price I got the SKS for....it doesn't matter what an AK costs...as it was a gift...
thanks for the advice

SKS's can be had a lot cheaper than a decent AK.

One of the SKS rifles that I picked up last year for next to nothing had been converted to use the duckbill style mags. They are just plain ugly and my first thought was to convert it back. However I tried it and liked it. Now I've got mags from 5 round capacity to 30 round and they all feed well. Have had no problems. The bolt must be open to lock in place however.
We will be much better off when we learn to deal with things as they really are, instead of how we wish them to be!
There is a mod you can do to the bolt that allows you to insert and remove the mags with the bolt closed, very handy.
