870 Marine Magnum vs. 870 Tac-2
I think I have it narrowed down to two shotguns.
Model 870™ XCS Marine Magnum
Remington Model 870™ XCS Marine Magnum®
or
870 Tac-2
Model 870™ TAC Shotguns
The purpose of the gun will be home defense and practical shotgun competition. (Sort of like IPSC but for shotguns)
Any thoughts?

I think you will find the grip and stock of the "TAC" more of a hinderance than an asset. I would buy the marine magnum, or get the best for your purposes the Police magnum.

Second vote for the 870 Police Magnum. You've got a great gun out of the box, and can gradually add what you want. All parts are interchangeable, but you probably won't need to. Maybe a Surefire forestock. They're amazing...as the light beam spreads, it basically matches the spread of 00 buckshot. Kinda like a shotgun laser sight.

Of your two choices I would suggest the marine magnum If only for the rust resistance coating on it and its internals.
Reason being is that my wife's grandfather has one, and has absolutly tortured it for close to 5 or 6 years.
Such torture includes:
Dropping it in saltwater, and never rinsing it off .
Leaving it outside in the elements for at least 3 of those 5 years.
Frequently it can be found in the sand/dirt outside in his "workshop"
No cleaning period. No oil either. He also never works the action until he needs it.
He lives in Florida close enough to the beach to see from his rooftop so very salty air.
The weapon has little to no rust and functions flawlessly everytime he uses it and I am not sure why or even how. So depending on exactly how close you are to saltwater that may be a strong consideration.
Note: While one could say I harbor a "strong distaste" for the 870, it does almost bring a tear to my eye to see a weapon mistreated so much.
Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.

So you would advise against the purchase of an HD shotgun that employs a "pistol grip"?
Im liking that 870P MAX (it has a pistol grip)...

Yeah, pretty much. Its not so much that I'm against the pistol grip, but more so that I'm against paying a premium for an uneeded almost worthless feature. I think these guns are simple marketing for the tacticool market. I cant think of a single advantage to the pistol grip in a pump gun. Auto... maybe.

I agree with SIXTO in that a pistol grip in a pump is more hinderance than help.
Go with the marine magnum.

Just curious SIXTO. Why would you call the pistol grip stock on a pump not needed but say it might be good for a semi-auto? Just FYI, I have a Benelli M4 and love the stock on it.

One reason is an auto can be operated one handed... a pump cannot unless you are some sort of exhibition shooter.

And having the pistol grip would give one more control over the weapon if shooting one handed?

Well, Yeah I guess for that reason too. I really think it’s a silly feature on both, but in an auto it makes a little more sense to me.
