Rust on old shot shells
I needed some 00 buck shells to put in my shotgun. When I went to my stash, I picked up a box of shells probably dating back to the 1990s. When I opened the box, I noticed a little bit of rust on the bottom of the shell (near the primer).
Are those shells any good, or should I use them for breaking in my new gun?

They're probably OK. Wipe them off and use them at the range. I wouldn't load them for HD - there's too much at stake!

That seems typical of shot shells stored for any length of time. They'd probably still work well for the range though. I don't think that most shell bases are actual all brass either.

Indeed - the base cup is and has been for a long time IIRC - plated steel. Most are ''brassed'' but some get other coatings.
Sure is thin anyways and doesn't seem to take much to have corrosion start. If you are out and see an empty hull on the ground - you may notice just how much they rust!
Small amount of corrosion is no problem at all IMO - shoot em up

bit of CLP ought to fix them up but i'd use them for breaking in my new guns or practice.

This is very common in older shells. I would have no problem at all using them.
