Pawn shops. Look for Mossberg 500 pump or Remington 870. Under $200 for a good model. Get a short 18.5" barrel for $100 and add a tactical light for another $100 and you have a very nice home defense gun.

There is no semi auto shotgun under $300 that I know of. A mossberg 930 can be had for around $375. It is a functionally sound shotgun.

Neither the 500 nor the 870 are semi auto.

As for checking pawn shops, that may be your best bet. My practice is not to get impatient and wait for the right deal to come around either new or used.

It's going to be hard to find a decent semi auto shot gun for that price. If you do, jump on it because it's a great deal. Since defense / tactical style shotguns seems to be a hot item these days, it'll be even harder to find what you're looking at that price. A decent used Remington 1100 should run between $350 - $400. Probably more if it's configured for defense or tactical use. Unless you're dead set on a semi-auto, I'd recommend going with a pump.

I use a Mossberg pump with a S&W light. I was going to put a pressure switch on the forend but while testing the bracket I found that when the forend is forward (in the cocked ready to shoot position), my left index knuckle can easily press the end switch to activate the light.

If you have a mini-mag flashlight laying around, you can buy a bracket and pressure switch for mounting on your shotgun for $30 - $40.

    You can buy a new Mossberg security 590 9-shot 12 gauge w/ 20" barrel for $330.

May I ask...why not the simplicity and durability of a good pump?

    Here are three

    Mossy Maverick 88 for $190

    Mossy 500 for 257.00

Mossy 500 Persuader for 258.00 (you may want to avoid a pistol group only)

There are more options out there if you look.

    edit to add:
I did find one Rem 870 that is under 300 and one 870 that is just over 300. While I am very happy with my Mossy 500 there are some here who suggest the 870 is far superior. Im not convinced. I believe both are very nice shotguns that will serve most people very very well. I know nothing about the Maverick 88 but the price sure is nice.

I like the side by side carriage guns. They are short & easy to use.

There are plenty. Charles Daly, SKB, Stoeger, Khan, and even the occasional used Remington 1100, Mossberg or even Winchester can be found that cheap.

Because most modern semi autos are just as reliable as a pump and the big danger of a pump is that in a crisis situation you'll short pump it and the BG kills you. :p

Just make sure you thoroughly test any self defense ammo before you rely on any gun (semi, pump, or whatever).

Little over 300, but Centerfire has Saiga 20's for pretty cheap.

+1 for the Saiga. The 12 gauge runs about $265 around here, if you can find it.
