Rifle Suggestions

We've all seen these threads. Everyone loves going to town on 'em. haha Anyhow, here's my specifics:

I'm looking for a rifle that I can do Gunsite's 223 Carbine course with. I do NOT want to spend the money for an AR-15 (again). I have owned an AR and really I just don't think my dissatisfaction with the platform warrants my spending that much on one.. again. My obvious alternative is an AK-47. That's my big choice right now. However, I know better then to settle without consulting you all. haha

I need a rifle that has a 20-30 round detachable magazine. Cost should be somewhere under $750 for the rifle itself - which can be used or new. Accuracy is a no-brainer. Should be of a size which wouldn't be too hard to maneuver around inside a house. Bells, whistles, red-dot sights, blah, are fine and dandy, but I'm looking for basic suggestions. The kicker? Not chambered in .223 / 5.56.

Any oddities out there I should look for or reliable options to the AR/AK choice??

It appears that an AK is indicated here. I really like the 7.62X39 myself.

For an oddity you could go with an M1 Carbine.

I think these look really pretty. Although slightly over 750.
VZ58 Rifle
Fixed Stock
Part #RIFLE-VZ58-HC - RIFLE-VZ58HC

If it was me though, I'd buy a Saiga and mod it out exactly how you want. They shoot really well for AK's, especially once you replace the trigger.

The Kel Tech SU Series may be a good option. Depending on what you want.
Have heard lots of good things about them.

If you're not 100% set on not being 5.56/.223, I would also suggest the Kel-Tec, probably the bravo model.

    Kel-Tec

It uses AR mags but doesn't use the direct impingement gas system - and can be had for around $400.

Just out of curiosity, what don't you like about the AR platform?

Anyway, the first thought that popped into my head was an AK-74, but that's in 5.45x39 (which is a great round, but one outside your requested parameters). The Microtech rifle is by all accounts a great rifle (making some improvements on the AUG), but is far out of your price range (I think it gets near $2k). I don't know if the Kel-Tec could make it through a Gun Cite course, and I'd never recommend a Mini-14 for any harder use than being a ranch plinker (folks with more knowledge than I have rarely seen one do well in a carbine course, and Pat Rogers flat said he's never seen one survive a weekend course).

Hm. A non-AR in 5.56 that does what an AR does. I actually have to think about that one.

I think that I would second the M-4 or maybe the Mini 14 or 30. I have a new DPMS and a brushed metal, black stock Mini, both would accomplish GS with no problem. But I know, I know noooooo 223's....just my .223 cents.

Good luck at GS, should be a real experience, wish I could go too!

dont know if this caliber will interest you but a Berreta CX4 Storm. Figured it'd be a good rifle because you dont need a 223 or 7.62 for home tactics and is small enough for quick movement. Ive handled one in a store and it felt like a sturdy weapon...a lot better quality than the Keltec.

Oh hell, you said NOT chambered in 5.56?

Scratch what I said then. Grab the AK-74 and don't look back.

Sorry missed the bottom. I would say your kind of limited to a 47/74 or a M1. Unless, you go to a pistol caliber.

While I know it cost a little more than your thinking, have you considered a P90
