The restrictions are: simple tax to the ATF; invasive and dangerous knowledge by bureaucrats that this SMG is what you've got; market pricing that's 20-30x what it should be. Assuming all of these impediments were eliminated, then it would be these two:
HK MP5 full-auto, in 9mm, with a strong spare parts inventory.
HK 53 full-auto, with spares.
Between them, I would see little need for any other SMG.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.

Tommy gun, UMP .45, BAR and M-4 are all excellent choices, I'd try to get them all, but M-4 would probably be first.
Or a Mark 12, they are some sweet shooters, suppressed, and go full auto.
