    Seeking Opinions AR15/M4

OK folks. I want to use my ITR on a HD rifle/carbine. I have decided I am going to go with the AR15/M4 platform and I would like to know which maker, in your learned opinion, offers good to very good price/quality for dollar invested.

before you ask $1-1.5k is my range. However the less I have to spend to get a good reliable piece the more I can spend on ammo and such.

    as always.
    Thanks in advance

I have a Bushmaster M4gery that serves me well, I like it, no real problems. I think RRA is probably one of the best deals out there though, there stuff seems sturdy.

I've been pimping ADS rifles for a little while now, as they appear to be one of the best values for the money on out there right now. A LaRue BUIS brings you up to just over $900. Do whatcha want with the remaining money the budget (ammo, mags, optics, whatever). LaRue has a bunch of combo packages for optics that are a good buy.

'Course, you could also get a Noveske N4 Carbine basic upper for $900 and an LMT Defender Lower for $330. Still leaves a few hundred bucks in you budget for ammo, mags, and optics (or at least a BUIS).

If you want dressed For the money, look at a S&W M&PT.
You can find them in the $1200.00 to $1300.00 range.

I have suggested to others that they contact Robert at Talon Arms. Their website has about 25% of what they actually have and do and they specialize in the Ar platform. They can put together a package you will be very happy with

RRA is the best deal going right now, and if S&W is offering a rebate, they are good too. Bushmaster seems to be the standard, however the first two I mentioned seem to have a little better fit and finish.

I am sure some of the less well-known manufacturers are producing quality guns. Unfortunately, many are producing junk. FWIW, I have seen a lot of AR's and most of the AR's I have seen that had problems came from less well-known manufacurers or were "frankenguns" assembled by their owners. I recommend you purchase an AR from one of the better-known manufacturers. It will significantly reduce the chance of buying a lemon.

I have to disagree with SIXTO. The Colt 6920 is the standard. Unfortunately, they can be hard to find and are expensive compared to equivalent rifles from other manufacturers.

I believe both LMT and Noveske are offering better products than Colt. However, unless your rifle will see a lot of hard use, the additional cost probably is not justified.

Bushmaster, RRA and S&W are reasonable alternatives to a Colt and provide a good quality rifle at a reasonable price. Of those three, I think RRA would probably be my choice.

    # 1 Choice is COLT for Brand
    # 1 Choice is Colt 6920 for Model

How much is life worth ? Within your stated price range.

Add on EO TECH (the one that uses AA Batteries) by attaching with Cantilever from EOTECH.

    Add on a Light.

Add on a DUOSTOCK then finished - good to go.

On the other than, depending on your intended use , AK-47 semi-auto version maybe a better alternative - buy 2 AK-47 and 7.62 X 39 ammo is less than half the cost of 5.56 mm. Make a change or two on the forearm then can add on the EOTECH and Light.

Noveske, Colt, LMT are probably the best quality/price for basic model ARs. Noveske will be ~$1400, Colt ~$1200-1300, LMT can be had for maybe ~$1000-1100 when you buy the upper and lower separately. Just my two cents.

I wouldn't get an AR15 on second thought...I have no real use for it. A shotgun would, in all practicaly, be better.

Edit - I have a Bushmaster BTW and am happy with it's preformance. The only issue (one that many have) is if you load 30 rounds into a magazine, sometimes bolt will catch and won't go home.

Many makers produce a good, reliable AR. Depending on your use several mentioned above would work. Check out AR15.COM for much more info on AR's.

As others have said, there are numerous great AR / M4 's to be had on the market today. I just purchased a high end DPMS and could not be happier. Be sure to check their website prior to making your decision...Good luck.

I recently decided to build my first AR-15, The reason I pieced it together was because for the same money as a complete rifle I could choose my own stock, grip and such, plus it's a good way to learn about your new toy.

Here's my complete build list. It came in right around $1.5k for everything shipped.

RRA entry tactical upper with dominator2 mount
    Mega stripped lower
    RRA lower parts kit
Magpul CTR complete milspec stock kit & butt plate
    Ergo suregrip
    Midway Industries forend rail 2-piece
    Magpul rail panels
    Eotech 511 holosight
    Vickers tactical sling
    QD swivels
Cheap VFG for now waiting on new QD Tangodown
    Surefire G2 w CAA mount
    4x PMAG
    1000 rounds fed xm193

    Have fun!
