    Well

It is my understanding that the pumps are more reliable between the various length rounds, but that said I am open to suggestions in pump or auto. I really want to end up with the most versatile platform possible.

    Thanks again,

by all means, the mechanical pump is the most reliable, but the semi-auto is good too. Do a lil' research on semi-automatic shotgun systems. Intertia recoil and gas.

If that won't do... get two guns that will....simply....
    Remington 870 (pump) with 28" barrel and a Siaga-12 (semi-auto).

Mossberg 835 usually comes with a long and 18" bl., interchangeable chokes, wood furniture and goes 2 3/4 to 3 1/2. I have had no problems with mine. The only thing I am not sure about is the rifled barrel.
