Here's a thread for those who like the good ol' M1A and the 7.62 NATO round. The AR 15 photo thread has been up now for several months and long may it run! It isn't expected that this thread will receive as much play as that thread but, for those who subscribe to the notion that a good small cartridge will get beat by a good big cartridge every time, or for those who can make room in their hearts for the M14 or any of its civilian clones as well as the 5.56, post 'em here.
I'm waiting for a well-used Springfield SOCOM 16 to come my way. Don't have much of a need, myself, for a big round like that, but I do appreciate the design of the M1A.
That looks like a very clean version of what I qualified with in Basic, back in the old days. Keep thinking I got to get me one of those some day. Thanks for the pic.
Thanks for the very different versions just on the initial page. Scott's looks as if it can shoot out a gnat's eye in a mudhole at 600 yards and cphillip's is a quite attractive shorty SOCOM without a lot of extra hardware hanging off. Of course I really go for the "other" M1s too.
The rifle is a low-number 0046XX serial numbered Springfield Armory that came with a plain walnut stock. 12-15 years ago when "Fred" first came out with his "Shotgun News" ads for the DoD M14 stocks I contacted him and asked him to send the best "go for broke" figured walnut stock he had. I sent him the funds (it was quite reasonable at the time) and trusted him to send out an attractive stock. I was grateful that he came through in spades.
It'd is more vivid in life than in photos and changes dramatically if positioned differently in a light source. When it arrived I wiped it down good with a lightly alcohol dampened rag and rubbed in linseed oil while sitting in the sun on a 100 degree Texas summer day.
If I shoot in a high-power match I put the plain one back on it. Shame as it's a good, heavy and dense piece of walnut.
Do post your Scout please Jason. I used to not be too keen on the SOCOM but was pleased with cphillips rifle in that Desert Sand.
Not certain I know what I'm talking about since I was a little too young for Nam but I think I'd have liked to have the M14 to play with if I'd been over there too SatCong.
