Buy in two pieces, save $140?

Am I missing something or do you save $140 when you buy an AR-15 in halves (Upper and then lower).

    Stag Arms Model 2T - $1125

    or

Stag Arms Model 2HT Upper Half - $695
Stag Arms Tactical Lower Half - $290

    695+290=985

The upper and lower seem to be the same as on the Model 2T

    Lower

No, you're not missing anything. There is a federal excise tax on the gun.

If you buy the gun whole, you pay it on the whole thing. If you buy and upper and a lower, then you pay the tax only on the lower (because that's the part that the ATF considers 'the gun', see). Conveniently, most of the money in an AR-15 is in the upper, so you avoid some tax that way.

Be careful though, you may also miss out on some warranty coverage too.

I bought separate upper and lower from Stag. I wanted to build the lower, so got 1 stripped and a parts kit. Super simple to build and learned a bit more about my rifle too.

The whole rifle package also includes accessories, such as a magazine or two and a case - you don't get these when you LEGO an AR. With that said, I'd much rather save the $140, as that's about the same as ten 30 round mags and a cheap case.

Yep.. thats a good way to do it! Take advantage of the loop hole when you can.
