Dpms, Bushmaster and the RRA entry tactical are all nice rifles for under the price you are looking to spend.

I know I like colt AR's alot. I would suggest that you go to this website, Code 4: Law Enforcement Sales and Service , I've bought a couple colt AR's from them. I just looked today and they have some lightly used colt ar15a3's model 6721 with the heavy barrel for $980 that I think you would like.

If looking for the cheapest one around classic arms has them for $599
    Classic Arms Inc.

CENTURY ARMS HAS JUST PRODUCED A SMALL LOT OF THESE REALLY NICE AR-15 RIFLES USING THEIR RECEIVERS AND SURPLUS COLT PARTS. THEY ARE FANTASTIC. I KNOW. I WAS SKEPTICAL TOO. BUT IN THE WORDS OF MADELINE KAHN ITS TRUE, ITS TRUE. ( OBSCURE BLAZING SADDLES REFERENCE. ) IN THE PAST CENTURY HAS PRODUCED SOME VERY ENTRY LEVEL AR-15 RIFLES. WHILE THEY ALWAYS FUNCTIONED PROPERLY THEY TYPICALLY HAD OLD STYLE A-1 SIGHTS, LIGHT BARRELS, ETC. WELL THAT WAS THEN AND THIS IS NOW. THESE THINGS ARE NICE. EACH RIFLE LOOKS NEW INSIDE AND OUT WITH BEAUTIFUL FURNITURE AND A REALLY NICE METAL FINISH. A-2 STYLE MICROMETER ADJUSTABLE SITES. HEAVY BBL WITH BIRDCAGE COMP AND BAYONET LUG. I WOULD PUT THESE UP SIDE TO SIDE WITH ANY OF THE BIG NAMES AND AT A FRACTION OF THE COST. BUT DON'T DELAY, SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED AND AT THIS PRICE THEY WILL GO FAST. ACCEPT ALL AR15/M16 TYPE HI-CAP MAGS. SHIPS WITH 2 THERMOLD 20 RD MAGS.... AR15-C........$599.95... - IN STOCK NOW -
***UPDATE , OFFICER MARCUS BUCHANAN, A POLICE CHIEF WITH A DEPARTMENT LOCAL TO US HERE, RECENTLY ACQUIRED ONE OF THESE RIFLES FOR testING. HE HAS SINCE BOTH PURCHASED THESE RIFLES AND ENDORSED THESE RIFLES TO THE OFFICERS IN HIS DEPARTMENT. HE SAY'S THEY WERE AMONG THE FINEST , MOST WELL ASSEMBLED AR-15 RIFLES HE HAS HAD THE PLEASURE OF FIRING. THAT MEANS A LOT COMING FROM MARC. HE IS A MAN WHO KNOWS HIS FIREARMS.

$1000 will buy you a decent DPMS and depending on the model have a few bucks left over for ammo.

You can get a great AR-15 for under your budget.

Buy and build a stripped lower. Lowers run $100+ and a LPK (lower parts kit) will run $60, stocks $60-90. Then buy an upper. DPMS and Oly Arms can be had for $400-500. Practice swapping the stuff off the upper as you replace items to upgrade. When you get experienced enough you can get a complete parts kit and lower then do it all.

    To build a lower:

    Roll pin punches: 3/32, 1/8, and 5/32
    Hammer
screw driver or allen wrench (for pistol grip screw)
stock wrench or combo wrench (CTD has them for $15-20 combo wrench)
pivot pin installation toon ($15 at Brownells-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
electrical tape (to mask off some areas to protect finish when driving pins, like on the bolt catch)

First time it will take you an hour to build the lower. After a few, you can do it in 15-20 minutes.

If you don't mind building from the ground up, get a stripped lower and a Del Ton rifle kit ($465-485 retail). This will land you an AR for about $600. Oly Arms wait is 2-4 weeks if you are lucky.
