    Ammo prices

Is there a big difference in price between 5.56 and 7.62 ammo (bulk)? I just plan on doing target and varment shooting. Of course I'd like the bigger of the two if they are close in price.
    Thanks to any responses.

7.62x39 is cheaper but 7.62x51(308) is more expensive compared to 5.56.

Im assuming your talking about 7.62x51mm NATO?
theres not a huge price difference when compared to 5.56x45, but it is slightly more costly
If you mean 7.62x39mm, youre in luck, its much cheaper than 5.56

Yeah, most the AKs I'm looking at are 7.62 X 39mm. Rookie here.

9mm and 7.62x39 are the most cost effective rounds at this point. Unless of course you compare them to .22 lr. 7.62x54R is still fairly cheap as well.

5.56 is double what it was two years ago and 7.62x51 is just digustingly expensive.

If your loking at an AK, the best ammo price is probably the newer Russian caliber, 5.45x39 due to a lack of high demand it seems to be cheaper. However, lack of high demand usually correlates with a lack of avaiability of accessories, spare mags, spare parts. That may or may not be the case. Just something to think about in case your planning on fighting off any zombie hoards after TEOTWAWKI. ;-)

The ammo is cheaper because it's east European surplus. Stock up while you can, if you go that route. There are not very many companies making new stuff. A couple of years ago, when Wolf was having trouble getting it over here, it was impossible to find 5.45x39. Now it's plentiful due to East European countries off loading it. But there’s also a lot of people buying it (including AR owners now that you can get uppers in 5.45x39), so it won’t last forever.

And also note that the surplus stuff is corrosive.
