Does anybody use 20 rounders any more? I just think they might be handy, but I'm new to ARs and the 30 rounders are cheaper.I just wondered if there was any reason to put back a few 20's.
Thanks in advance.

The only reason I can think of is if you find yourself in a restricted state like California.

I prefer the 20 round mags... its a lot easier to go prone with a 20, and 1 box of ammo = one mag.

I dont use 20's at all. I use 10 rounders for hunting varmints and 30's for the bench. I now have a boatload of 30 rd PMAG's for SHTF situations. I say, use whatever fits your immediate needs but stick with a quality mag. Some AR's are very finicky in regards to magazines.

Of the stash from Stag I bought with the Stag 15 3L, awhile back, the 20rd mags were completely reliable; a couple of 30rd mags, somewhat less so. On the 30-rounders, the failures to feed were seemingly due to the magazine's follower sticking within the first half load being shot. Didn't test with various mags, but these two had an occasional feed-related issue, whereas the 20's didn't. As I'm not well-versed with AR's or the magazines, I cannot say what was the real cause, or whether simply tuning would have cured it.

I only have one of each, and so far almost always use the 20 rounder. Like sixto said, makes shooting prone or off a bench with bipod or sandbags way easier. Although I haven't bought it yet, my plan for SHTF is to keep a 30 rounder in the magwell, with a 20 rounder strapped to the buttstock. I couldn't appreciate how awkward (and inaccurate) firing prone with a 30 rounder was until I tried it. And your profile will have to be much taller so you're a bigger target.

20 round mags are more compact for HD use , or tight spaces as well as the mentioned bench or prone shooting.

I like my 10 rounders for long range or out hunting/varminting. 30 round for anything else.

I use 20's because that is all you can have shipped into Maryland.
If I hit an out of state gun show with some 30 round PMags I might pick up a couple depending on price. But like others have said, one box, one mag....... Works for me!![]()

Looking for (2) 20's and (2) 30's
How do you guys like the Magpul's ?
In the Army (a long time ago far away) we would tape two 20 round magazines back to back, thus giving the capability of almost 40 rounds.
I now have 30 round and 20 round high quality magazines. The performance with both is almost the same. However, the "almost" does give me concern, because I have never had any failures using the 20 round magazines.
When I served we only had 20 rounders and 30's were just coming out,as others have said shooting prone is easier with a 20,I have both but prefer the 30 for HD due to 10 more rounds before a mag change.Plus if you are fortunate enough to have an M16 on FA you don't run out as quick
