Well, it appears you have a couple months to do your research. Personally, if you can get one before the election, that would be good. I think prices and availability may be of concern long before January 2009 especially if you-know-who wins the election. 2009 and the future will become a mute point in that case. Just my 2¢

DPMS and Stag Arms are worth taking a look at. Alot depends on your budget and if like the stock AR-15 or want to make it tacti-cool. Barrel length is another consideration. Are you shooting in matches or wanting it for home defense. There are alot of good manufacturers out there and the people on this forum can point you in the right direction. If you haven't had any formal training I encourage it highly. It's money well spent. Also save up for surplus magazines and ammunition, you never know what the future holds. I mention the Stag because I own one. What me biased? Not a chance.

This is what is fueling my decision to purchase one...I made a firearms purchase last week so need to wait a few months to keep my wife at bay. I do appreciate the validation!

If money is not an issue, check out noveskerifleworks.com. You'll get alot of recommendations on his rifles from the guys at m4carbine.
I bought an upper from him and have been very impressed.

I went to gunsamerica.com and bought a DPMS Sportical from an outfit called "the exchange" in Brookings, SD for $665.00.

The gun came with a hard case, 2 30rd mags, cleaning kit and manual.

All in All, a great deal. I recieved my gun 5 days later.

What do you want the rifle for? Hard-use and home defense? Plinking? Target shooting? Do you have a budget you're trying to work with?

All of the above, no competition. Currently researching DPMS Lite 16" chambered for .223...looks like lots o' bang for the buck. Trying to stay under $800.

I currently use a DPMS lower in my AR because is seemed to like my .300s better, haven't tried a DPMS upper or a full rifle from them, but i have no issues with my lower's quality.

If you want to run it hard, or it to be able to be run hard, requirements for that are going to preclude simply plinking and target shooting. $800 is going to be tougher to work with. Bear in mind I also have no idea what Rhode Island laws are.

ADS has a good and slowly growing reputation as a work gun (M4Carbine.net has a couple threads there on some being T&Ed and they're dong well). G&R Tactical has them at good prices: $900 for the complete rifle plus one PMag, or $600 for a complete upper (charging handle, handguards, LMT bolt carrier group). If I could convince you to bump your price range up a bit, I'd recommend an LMT Defender lower, but you can get a complete Stag lower with a 6-position stock for $250 from RB Precision's website. You're still down a rear sight, but you'd have a shooter that'd do well as a work gun.
