Are there any benefit to them and what is there main area of usage?
I have been seeing more and more of them but have never tried one or even had my hands on one; just curious.

Are you talking about sights on a carry pistol, or a hunting pistol?
Electronic? (battery?)...certainly not on a CCW pistol!

No, for rifle. I guess they have them for shot guns too but I still don't see any point of optics on them.
I think he is referring to sights like the EOTech.

For a rifle...well, I have an EO Tech holographic sight for my AR...great sight...works in all kinds of light...day or night. The perfect sight for old or weak eyes...quick target acquisition...very accurate.
Not really a 'hunting sight', but the perfect sight for homeland security.
Stay armed...EO Tech,...stay safe!

They are used for fast target acquisition, the cheaper ones like nc star are good enough for paintball or bb guns IMHO.there are some sights in the 30.00 price range from BSA that hold up fairly well on rifles ,shotguns and pistols

Thanks for the replies. So their basically like a scope with out the magnification and more for close quarter engagements. I never knew their purpose but I did know some here would.
Now to buy a suitable rifle to put one on top of and try it out :)

Dot sights are gaining popularity with hunters, too, for brush-distance bird or hog hunting (shotguns and rifles, respectively).
They're also quicker to train soldiers to hit what they aim at than standard irons.

Put an Aimpoint Comp ML2 on my Bushmaster as a lot of others have. Also, I decided to try one out for deer hunting and put a Burris Speed Dot on my Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 magnum. It has worked great and I have taken two deer with it thus far. They really have a lot of uses and target acquisition is very fast and allows the shooter to leave both eyes open. They can be a blast on .22 pistols as well. Try one out sometime.

A couple of my hunting rifles have red dots on them. I used iron sights exclusively for many years and still prefer them to any scope. But age has a way of demanding changes and adaptions from us. I can no longer keep most iron sights in focus with the target. However my hunting situations are close up, and I did not want magnification. Red dots provided the best solution, so that is what I use. They are many models to choose from with features as simple as a single red dot with brightness adjustment to mutli-recticle red dot-green dot sights.
