Go with the rifle in preparation for the possible AWB. The .40 may still be available later.

Go with the rifle because it's a better choice for home defense. You gain nothing by putting a pistol round in a bigger package. If you choose to use a pistol round for home defense, use a pistol.

Get an AR-15 while you still can, if you have the cash. It may be too late now though.

I predict gun show pricing for AR-15s will be approximately doubled now.

My friend has been looking to get an AR15 for some time now but has been putting it off. Was just talking to him tonight and he mentioned he probably better get one now. I'm just afraid he might have waited too long, sure he will probably still be able to find one if he acts soon, but he is going to pay a hefty premium for his procrastination. One of our local gun shops said they've sold at least 20 AR this week alone.

There's nothing a .40 S&W carbine can do that can't be done just as effectively with a 5.56mm. There are a LOT of things a 5.56mm carbine can do that CAN'T be done with a .40 S&W. The choice, for me, was obvious (but it DID take me a while to decide on exactly your same question). As for the Beretta Storm, I wasn't able to find many people who didn't like it a lot.

AR's are on Budsgunshop.com right now for 699.00. M4ish set ups.

    Go with the AR.

IMHO get rifle ( Buy MAGS) for your .40 caliber right now. CDNN has some LE trade in mags for 12-20 bucks.

    I'd go with the rifle

Get a RockRiver and some spare parts to go in the buttstock and plenty of mags... Get a light of some sort to go on the fore end just don't get carried away with the gadgets. Buy an XDm-40 and plenty of mags and ammo. I would look for a pistol and rifle training course.
