Is there a rifle that is more or less made for self defense?

I understand that you can use a shotgun for self defense, my question I guess what would be the most practical and a good size rifle for self defense. Whether it is for home keep or travel.

There's going to be as many opinions on that as there are guns.

    I like the AR.

AR15 is the semi-auto civilian version of the M16 so it would be. Except there's a run on them due to recent political tides.

Okay, it's not likely to get many votes but I think a short barrelled lever action rifle in .357 would make a good defensive weapon. It's very light and compact making it ideal in tight quarters. Marlin makes one with an 18.5" barrel; Puma makes a winchester replica that has good reviews with a 16.5" barrel. You can carry 10 rounds so you have great capacity and the recoil is nominal in this package.

I have an AR15 and love it but its a LOT more bulky compared to a lever action carbine.

The disadvantage? Having to work the lever for each round versus a semi-auto.

    So here's another option:

A Berretta Cx4 in 9mm. Plenty of power for close range home defense. Lot's of capacity (you can buy 30 rd mags; at least for right now...) and it's VERY compact because of the short barrel and the unique design. I think this rifle is perfectly suited for defensive purposes. Some might suggest this in a .40 but for defensive only, the 9mm will have better ballistics out of a 16.5" barrel and it's a LOT cheaper to practice with and has lower recoil to enable better shot placement.

Gee, I almost have myself talked into one...

Around the house (but not inside) I could depend upon my AR-15, or my Winchester 336/30-30...but I would probably prefer my double barrel shottie for a 'meet and greet' inside the home.
Regardless, I always have my .45 pistols around for HD.

I'll add another vote for that one. especially for those who live in areas where EBR's are

The Ruger camp carbines are also good choices. I'd even say the Ruger Deerfield carbine in .44 mag will do nicely.

Cheapest AR rifle or carbine? Depends on the manufacturer. Cheapest will likely be something by Olympic Arms.

Other inexpensive rifles/carbines are your AK series which will (usually) run you less than most ARs.

Have you considered trying the search feature? Defensive rifles is not an uncommon topic.

A lot of rifles are made for personal defense. The AR15 happens to be the civilian version of what our military uses, so I'd say it's fair at that role.
