My brother has the S&W M&P 15A and loves it. Almost everyone I have seen that had the S&W liked them. A lot of the S&W manufacturing is done in house by S&W themselves. My bro's M&P15 came with a lot of nice goodies too such as Troy battle sights.

I know they are issued to a lot of LE agencies.

Talk on AR.15.com sounds like they are good rifles. I believe Stag was building them at one point for S&W. I doubt S&W are manufacturing parts in house though.

According to S&W site they manufacture their receivers in house.

I have had my M&P15X for about three months now and am very pleased.
I have over 500 rnds and not a single malfunction.
I went with the X for the four sided picatinny rail and the Troy rear folding sight.

I've got about 8 magazinesand a sling, and have ordered an EOTech 552, other than that I'd like to keep it as is.

Shoots a nice group, when I can see the target.

If you are going to go the 5.45 route, stock up on both ammo and the magazines. I like the round but it seems that the supply is drying up and of course the prices continue to rise. The overall concern on one of the AK related forums I am on is that of having the foreign sources of 5.45 ammo either dry up/be embargoed and not having any domestic sources available at present. There are a few domestic sources of 7.62 x 39. Just something to be aware of.

Maybe I'm just not very informed, but I thought that the AR's (most of them) are 5.56mm NATO, which is slightly hotter than the .223. So what is this 5.45?

Most likely, talking about the 5.45x39mm round used by the AK-74.

S&W is producing uppers and complete carbines as well in 5.45x39mm to take advantage of the currently available and cheap round. C-Products is supplying the magazines.
