The 590 is a better built gun that the 500, and more directly compares to the 870.

thanks everyone... just got back from the range. Put another 100 rounds through the PF-9.

At the store they had tactical stocks that fit both the 870 and the 500. They were priced at $100 for the adjustable stock with pistol grip. Is this right? I thought they were closer to $60-75.

Yes, def referring to the 590a1, which I understand is the only shotgun that passed the DoD 3000-round torture test before being approved for field issue.

Have a 43 year old 870 and a 20 year old 500. Neither have ever failed, jammed or given any problems.

I just picked up this Mossberg 590 last week. Came with factory pistol grip and heat shield. I put about 20 slugs through it today at the range. This being my first shotgun I can't really compare it to anything, but it shot like a champ and I absolutely love the look of it. Home defense at its best.

I plan on putting a shell holder on the side and getting a bayonet Piccany rail adapter for a tactical light.

The 870s were already in the armories.

I purchased a Mossberg 500 series, came with an 18 1/2 inch barrel, and a 28 icher, also came with a pistol grip kit. $300.
Have yet to fire it tho, currently has the short barrel on it, I use it for HD, thankfully I have yet to need it.

wow... was that new or used? If new, mind if I ask where?

I was leaning towards the 870 because I saw it for $309 new, shipped. Of course, this doesn't include any accessories.

I have owned both, but sold the 870. I have owned 4 Mossberg 500's. Bought them all used except for one, and never had a problem with one, nor do I know anyone who has. Can't say that about the 870. The 870 is a good gun, I just prefer the Mossy becuase of anecdotal paranoia.

I think the big thing for me is that the 500 has the safety where it is. I like that alot, maybe because the savage .410 that my dad gave me for squirrel hunting when I was a kid was set up like that.

    Cool

I found this. It seems to be very informative on the comparisons of the two shotguns.
