    Rem 870 vs Moss 500

Anyone have experiences with both of these weapons? I had a Mossberg 500 about 10 years ago and it performed well. (By well, I mean flawless after many rounds). Is the Remington as reliable?

I'm looking to buy another 12 gauge that can be fitted with an 18" barrel for home and a 24-28" for hunting. Also possibly a rifled barrel as well. The shotgun seems to be one of the most versatile guns. Budget would be between $3 - 400. Should I stick with the Mossy? Any input is appreciated.

Both extremely reliable firearms. You're not going to go wrong with either. Have a couple of Remingtons and 3 500's and no problems with any of them. You seem to have enjoyed your Mossberg so no reason to switch unless you just want to try out a different "toy".

I had a Mossberg 500 in 20ga about 6 years ago...sold it. This time around, I went for the Remington 870 Express. Both will chamber the 2 3/4" or 3" shells, both have dual slide bars. I like my 870 but I really can't think of many reasons to choose one over the other. Rather have my old Ithaca back, but that's a different story. I like the matte finish on the 870 better as opposed to my former Mossy's blued finish, but most are available options on any of them these days. I would say the Mossbergs are a bit heavier in weight, and possibly a thicker barrel. I've been kicking around the idea of the Mossberg 18 1/2" breecher barrel for a replacement on my 870. If you go internet shopping for 870 barrel replacements, you'll find most of them are made by Mossberg. Got my 870Exp slightly used as new for under $300.

My agency has both flavors. Over the long haul, the Remingtons hold up MUCH better. We're talking thousands of full power rounds but the Remingtons really go the distance. The 500's, not so much. FWIW, I'm the cat that has to fix them so I have some first hand experience.

I have 2 500's and one 870. Both are great and good solid guns.

I prefer the 500 solely because of were the safety is postioned. The Mossbergs safety is just a little easier for me to use with a standard stock.

If I was going to get a pistol grip stock then I would get an 870.

    I'm an 870 guy.

That's what I was originally issued and what I got used to. Got about five or six in various configurations from shorty field to marine grade and several in between. Thinking about adding a Dlask 8.5" to the stable, but haven't got the $ right now. Check out www.dlaskarms.com and go to shotguns for pics. Too cool for words and 100% legal up here.
Having said that, you'll be happy with either the Rem or the Moss. Both fine shotties with excellent service networks and lots of "toys" available for both.

I've NEVER owned nor shot the Mossberg but I can vouch for the Remington 870 based on the nearly three decades I had one while in law enforcement. It ALWAYS functioned flawlessly and kept me out of more gun fights than I'd like to mention just by its mere presence and appearance.

My current self defense shotgun is an 870 Marine Magnum modified by Scattergun Technologies with a Surefire forearm and tritium ghost-ring sights, and the 870P stock with ammo sidesaddle.

It also has had the Mag-na-port Power Port at the muzzle treatment that tames recoil considerably and I can place three (3) slugs from it into one elongated hole at 50 yards.

I have had both guns ( 2Rem, 3 Moss) for a number of years - both ribbed smooth bores, smooth slug and rifled slug barrels. Both makes have been extremely reliable. NO ISSUES. Go for the one that you feel comfortable with and what fits you.

    Minor thread jack.
Which would you prefer: a Mossy 590A1 or a 870 Police Magnum?

BTW, there's a defensive shotguns forum here

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this opinion :P

I would feel equally safe trusting either the 870 or the 500 with my life.

The 870 is the better gun, but for most peoples uses both are fine.
