Well I have an older Remington Sportsman 48 that I bought from a Ducks Unlimited auction in 1980. Decided to make it my HD gun, but thought I would modify it to shorten barrell, pistol grips, black matte finish, barell with blade on end? (if can find), etc... I have many other hunting guns and this never gets used, so I wanna play. Want barrell to be as short as legal allows.
Any ideas appreciated!

Probably for what you would pay to have this done you can buy a good HD gun for less.
I don't think there are a lot of add on's and tactial gear for a Sportmans 48

You can get a Mossberg Mavrick for under 200 with a 18.5" barrel and a pistol grip for about $20. just a thought.

If I was to purchase a HD shotgun outright, which would it be? Not looking to break the bank. Did that at Xmas, and bought new revolver before that!
Look at a MOssberg 500/590 or Remington 870 Express or Wingmaster. Lots of aftermarket stuff for them and dead nutz reliable.

Have your gunsmith cut the barrel down, re-bead it and re-blue it. ($40-50?)
Add a pistol grip. While there isn't one that I know of specifically made for it, they don't change much, there will be one that should fit, even if with some minor modifications.
Or, you could shave down the stock an make it look like this:
The federal limits are MINIMUM 26" over all length and 18" barrel length, measured from the bolt/breach face to the muzzle.
I'd leave the gun as is, sell it to fund the purchase of an 890.
