    Just bought a beautiful rifle

Not sure what I have, though. It's a Remington that a fellow won in a sales contest over twenty years ago, and it appears unfired. It is a Remington 700 short action with jeweled bolt and the standard two-position safety. The rifle is in .243 caliber. What I found so unusual is the stock - it appears to be what I'd call a light varmint stock - flat foreend, but very thin, and the toe of the forestock angles up and back and is angled and sharp, not rounded. The wood is flat gorgeous - appears to be some sort of feathered or tiger-striped walnut, and it has no end cap at the forward end of the stock. The stock is checkered on the forestock and the pistol grip. The stock is a low Monte-Carlo. Very light and handy little rifle.

    Any idea what this is?

    Best,
    Jon

Hi Jon - not seen much of you recently!

Hard to tell so far but - one or two pics would be great to see if possible. When did they start making 700's - I seem to recall there were options on woodwork configuration.

I'll see if I can put a few together. Been on the road for work. Gonna try to hit a last-ditch deer hunt tomorrow - first (and only!) time I'll get to go this year. Whew!

My Ruger Varmint stocks have a similer disign. Exept for the angled toe, and a thin forend, or Monty Carlo, the forend doesnt have checkering eather.
I wonder why the forend is thin? I would think that they would make it thick. So it is more stable when using a tree or whatever, to support it.

Anyhow it sounds like a sweet rifle. I like the .243. Its very vercitile cartrage. What sorta barral does it have, Bull, tapered? What length? Thinking about beding, or floating the barrel? What kind of glass are you going to put on her? Are ya getting a new trigger?

Im jelouse!! Its been a long time since I turned vermin into red mist!

    Like this?

It's not like this is it?

This is my new rifle I got for Christmas. It shoots really well. The pictures don't do it justice. I need to get one of those red blankets like Chris.

It is a 700LSS (Laminate Stainless Steel)

    Nice rifle hawkeye

My red background actually is not a blanket - just go to WallyWorld fabric Dept - find some fleece in that color and buy a coupla yards. Warning - it is a lint magnet!!!

Thanks guys- it also shoots really well. Better than I can shoot it, but I am working on that when I can. The Burris Ballistic Plex 3.5-10x scope is really cool too.

Good to have the pics Jon - thx for those.

Gotta say - still hard to pin that down 100% - but my breadth of rifle knowledge - particularly going back a ways, is not that good.

Jon........What you have is an older Rem 700 ADL gun...........better gun to be exact.. The BDL had the forend tip, matching tip on the grip, and buttplate and QDs.........Hinged flootplate came on the BDL.........and not the ADL... The wood was specially selected for the calibers of 22-250, 220 swift, 222 Rem, 243, and 6mm guns...........Varmint grade guns.. they shoot VERY accuratly (I have a ADL 22-250 with Redfield 6x18 variable with rangefinder (about 30 yrs old) you have the older redfield mounts too..(at least i think you do)
    GREAT FIND there!!
