12 ga. Slugs?

This is a discussion on 12 ga. Slugs? within the Defensive Rifles & Shotgun Discussion forums, part of the Related Topics category; I'm new to shotguns. Would like to know if "rifled slugs" can be shot in any shotgun or only those with special barrels?...

"Rifled slugs" may only be shot through a smooth bore shotgun barrel. Sabot slugs are for "rifled barrels". You can, however, shoot Sabot slugs in a smooth bore but not the other way around. Firing Sabot slugs in a smooth bore wont be very accurate at long distances but will not hurt you or your gun.

Firing a rifled slug through a rifled barrel will eventually shoot the rifling out of the barrel. Its not safe either, dont do it.

Just a note. If you want the slugs for home defense load, they are WAY overkill and will go through interior walls and keep going. I would not recommend slugs for anything other than hunting

I've got a 12 ga. side by side for home defense. I wouldn't shoot the slugs unless in some "hope it never happens extreme situation." Always good to have something heavy around "if" ever needed, you never know. Thanks for the info.

IDK, I don't think there are many reasons to store one 12 guage shot gun with XX buck and the other with slugs. If it were me, I would load XX buck in both, and store them (securly) in different parts of the house. Unless you live near some huge critters.

I guess it could be useful against robots. Just joking. Slugs don't stop robots (well cylons, but not terminators).
