Stay away. They are a fun gun to play with and a great conversation piece but way too problematic to use as a HD shotgun. This isn't just information from others, I own one.

11-87 is a great gun. You might also look at the Winchester 1300.

Yes, unfortunately it is not possible to get an pump action shotgun here in austria. I have got an buddy in germany (where pump action shotguns are allowed) and I have used once an winchester 1300 at the range, and I liked the gun.

I have visited inantoher gun store, and there I have seen an franchi I-12 police model at a very good price. Has somebody experience with franchi shotguns? Or are those guns not very common here in the United States?

Franchi are common with hunters, they are a quality, but less expensive alternative to the typical Remington/Benellli/Beretta fare.

I do know that the earlier models had trouble with the charging knob falling off, but that was on the upland hunter/hunter versions of the gun. I have no experiance with the police version, but I would imagine its a different charging knob anyway. I dont even think they sell the police version stateside.

Winchester 1400s are nice. Semi too.

I have bought the remington 11-87 yesterday. Next week I'll test it at range.

If when defending your home, you have the ability to penetrate through wall and injure others...i.e. neighbors or young kids in your house...you might want to consider #5 or #6 shot. Highly effective for HD, and won't go through walls like buck shot.
and good choice with the 11-87
