Making a Romanian WASR look pretty

You may recall that I picked up a WASR about a week ago...

Well, I still haven't gotten to shoot it yet, but I'm almost positive I will this weekend.

In the meantime, I've just been playing around with it in my spare time.

Here's what I started with, just a standard AK with a slant brake.

Serviceable, but not the most aesthetically pleasing AK-47.

So, I set about seeing what I could do to help it out a bit.

First I applied some tung oil. It helped a bit.

Not satisfied, I put more tung oil on and stripped/polished the bolt carrier.

Looking better. But the wood was still too rough for my tastes and I wasn't completely satisfied with the color or general feel of it either.

So, I went and bought some amber shellac for that authentic Soviet look and fine grit sandpaper. Nothing like insect secretions to make a firearm look nice. After a few coats, I've got it where I want it.

The buttplate and sling mount are removed from the stock, but you can't really see that. I've got them back on now.

    Closeups:

The above were taken with the flash on. Under bright light, the stock has a nice orange glow from the amber shellac. Under lower light it has a nice golden brown color:

I suspect under outside light the color will fall somewhere in between the two.

The stock feels nice and smooth now. No more rough edges in the wood.

Let me know what you think!

Lipstick and beer always made things look prettier for me,

That looks pretty nice. I might have to copy that for my WASR.

I would still like to get a collapsible stock and a fore end with a rail. Make it more of an Evil Black Rifle.

I had it all wrong. I read the title and thought it was going to be about trading in the AK for an AR.

Seriously though, it looks a lot nicer. Nice work.

    Nice one.

True, although the original Soviet military version of the AK-47 did have the polished steel bolt carrier, though whether or not their stocks were as shiny as mine is debatable.
