Saiga
What is everyone's opinion a Saiga as a SHTF rifle. I'd like an AR, or even a mini14 to replace the one I had stolen 10 or so years back, but both are now priced well out of my range. However I did see several Saigas for under $500 at this past weekends Richmond gun show. I would probably go with the .223 in case the import of 7.62x39 should be banned.

The Saiga is good to go for what you stated. I have AK's - several that are Saiga conversions - and AR's. For a SHTF scenario, I will grab my go bag and an AK. Although I don't get the tight groups like my AR at the range I know I can hit with it and its uber reliable/durable. This is not a knock on AR's - I have a Colt, Rock River and LWRC.

They also make them in .308.
A 9mm might expand but a .45 will never shrink enough to fit 17 in the magazine.

For a SHTF rifle you can't beat an AK variant.
If you found a Saiga for under $500 and it's in good condition, jump on it. That's a very rare low price these days.

An intruder will be incapacitated by tear gas or oven spray, but if shot with a .357 Magnum will get angry and kill you.

I have not fired mine yet (got it last week) but from stripping to re lubricate it, the thing is SO SIMPLE in function that I can clearly see why these things could be abused and still keep the operator alive... there is a reason why the AK47 is so reliable, it's inexpensive, simple to make, simple to operate, reliable and got the job done for many over several decades... that's saying something.
If it's SHTF like in the LA riots, the AK has the firepower and reliability... and it's less expensive to shoot that other "evil assault weapons." High cap saga mags cost more than the regular AK types though.
