    Remington 870 7 shot...should I get it?

It's on sale for $350 through today...

Looking for something a little bigger than a 40S&W that can sit at home.

...or should I keep shopping, and get something that can chamber 3.5" shells?

    Opinions?

There's really no reason to use anything bigger than a 2 3/4 inch shells for personal defense.

I'm not sure where prices are now, but some months back, $350 would have been an ok price, not a sale price. 3.5" shells for what? Unless you are hunting geese, you won't need them.

Unless you plan on using it for hunting, you will be served just fine with 2 3/4". Not a bad price either.

A year ago, it was $300 OTD. You probably have a good price in today's climate. I like the 3" shells.

$350-$400 sounds about right for a Remington 870. You can't go wrong with it. I am already on my 2nd one after I somehow managed to break my first one and sold it to a buddy for cheap. Only then did I realize I could have fixed it myself after he told me what it took to fix it.

That is okay though, my 2nd 870 has a factory mag tube extension so I don't have any dimples to grind down!

Just picked one up about 4 weeks ago. The price is reasonable. It will handle 2 3/4" and 3" . I see no reason for 3 1/2" Even 3" slugs are a bite much. Normal 00 and other shot work well along with 2 3/4" slugs. I like the looks so it is my new truck gun! I don't think I can hurt the finish like I could on one of my std 870's

well put. besides 3 1/2 inch shells will knock you down if you make a quick unbalanced shot in a HD situation you will not have time to get a perfect stance. I have an 870 express mag with capability of chambering 3 in shells but I still only use 2 3/4

My after market extension functions quite well. Allowing the extra capacity and I also added an Uncle Mikes Side Saddle , permitting another 6 rounds handy on the receiver. Following the late J.Coopers advice I keep only 2 rounds in the mag. with the hammer down. The first round out the tube is #4 buck , the second is 00B .The side saddle is filled with 3 00B and 3 slugs. It rests peacefully at bed side till roused. It is fitted with the 20 " bbl. Sometimes I`ve wakened in the night and caressed it. For the noise that wakes the wife , is a Walther PPKS ready to hand. She has a S&W 38 w/3"bbl. at hand on her side. We have lived in some rather untasteful areas over the yrs. There has been occasions of a knock on the door in the middle of the night. I answer it as you would as if you don`t know whats on the other side. With the lights out. All have been friendly and polite, therefore welcomed.

2 3/4" is the most common, but you'll occasionally come across 3" and 3 1/2" if you are lucky and brave enough to shoot those types of loads. I've only shot 2 3/4" shells and I can tell you that is more than enough for me. I am not recoil shy but after about 50 slugs and some buckshot rounds in the mix, my shoulder is feeling worn out.
