I have the M590a1 and love it. Its solid built and easy to use. The safety is in the optimal place... and my wife loves it.
I got a few odd glances when I had the bayonet on at the range...but hey...thats why it has a bayonet lug, right?

Either one should serve you well, handle both if possible, figure out which one you like the controls on better. Basically I'd say whichever you can find a better deal on.

To me, for sporting purposes, I don't feel the position of the safety matters.
But for a fighting shotgun, I really prefer having the safety up on the tang where Mossberg places them instead of the cross bolt type behind the trigger guard. (personal preference)
I have a Moss 590 and it is a great shotgun for defense.
However the Rem 870 is the most popular shotty for home defense & LEO.
Also Scattergun Technologies which was bought out by Wilson Combat builds an awesome fighting shotgun on the Remington platform. 870's. They will also rebuild and rework customer supplied 870's under their "Remington Steal" deal at a reasonable cost. Check out their website here.
** Suggestion: Find a cheap, but workable Rem 870 at a local pawn shop and then send it to Scattergun Technologies for the rework!

Much like the 9mm vs 45 or Glock vs XD debates, I think this one also boils down to picking the one that fits you. They are both extremely solid platforms and either will serve you well.
Having said that... I was always partial to Mossberg. YMMV

What he said.
You can't go wrong with either one. Just pick the one you like better.
The Mossberg 590 is my next purchase. Need to upgrade from my Mossberg 500A.

The tang mounted safety on the Mossberg is great until you put a pistol grip/shoulder stock combo (like the Knoxx) on then its in all the wrong place. I find its about useless because you have to move your hand off the grip to get to it.
The button to rack the slide however is easy to get with your thumb with a pistol grip.

$570 is waaaay too pricey for a pump shotgun. You could get a 930spx for that much.

both are good guns. you can go wrong with either.

I don't fuss too much over the safety placement. It might be a bit awkward or inconvenient but, in a home defense situation, that switch is getting thrown into the 'fire' position as soon as I pick it up and that's where it will stay until I'm convinced there is no immediate danger. During that time, I'll continue to rely on the same safety I use with all firearms: trigger finger discipline.
