870 bullpup....any ideas?
Thinking on converting one of my 870's to a bullpup and wondering if a stock conversion exists anywhere. I did all of my searches and came up w/zip. My wife surprised me by saying she wanted to go pistol grip on one of the shotguns but I think that's a bad plan unless I convert one of the 20's. A 12 guage with only a grip is....just not controllable IMO.
Anyway, it'd be a fun project gun if I can get the basic kit. Ideas?

I'm not sure one exists, and I'm not sure it would even work.

I saw one for a mossberg 500 on gunbroker not too long ago. I haven't seen anything like that (new) in years.
ETA: As a matter of fact there's a couple complete bullpups over there right now

I have a vague memory of one being available commercially. I think they're still made for the Mini 14. Try a search for that and maybe the same company makes one for the 870 as well.

Does sound weird I know. I saw a factory built Moss 500 and it was kind of interesting. Definite work went into the stock to make the action functional. I'll keep digging. Thanx.
BTW, for a short version on the 870 I looked at the youth model. Actually a handy little shotgun and ready for handoff to some grandkid down the road (but I'm alright it that's still a ways down the road).

That is strange. I never even thought of such a thing, but I guess it makes the gun more compact...could be nice!

I saw such a thing advertised, as an aftermarket 870 stock, probably back in the 1980's. I never saw a review of one. Mossberg did make a Bullpup, based on the 500. It was briefly approved for us to use on patrol. (big-city PD)
I want a shotgun I can use ambidextrously, in a hurry, with equal efficiency from either shoulder. A side-ejecting bullpup does not give me that ability, so I have never been interested.

Go for a AOW. It's a 5.00 tax stamp.

There was a company that made them in the late 80s; as with the 500 bullpup above, they were abominable.
A pistol grip alone is, as you believe, an equally bad idea.
A defensive shotgun has to work, first and foremost. Choate makes a youth length PG stock, for around $40. Its the best $40 you'll spend on your 870. The shotty will be useable from either shoulder, capable of being fired from the shoulder, and you can get an 11" pull, which makes managing recoil far less of an issue. The stock will fit both the 12 and 20, IIRC.

Only for transfer. It is still a $200 tax stamp for production. Plus you can never put a stock on it. Which really can cut down on the useability by quite a lot. While on a SBS you can do whatever you want whenever you want to it.
OP: If you want a Bullpup shotty, best bet seems to be the Mossberg model.
