Big negative, ammo availability.

Which aspect of the rifle are you wanting to talk about? Design? Reliability? Ammo selection?

I would think ammo and magazines would be hard to come by and expensive

I agree on the ammo issue. Now .223 is another matter entirely. :)
I wouldnt buy one. I had one in 223 that I liked.

Thanks for the reality check. Ammo and mags seem to always be the problem these days.

don't know about the 6.8 but the mini-14 which is the .223 works great for myself. i think the mini-30 is the .30 cal version or 7.62 something like that. i like my .223 version though
i bought one they are nice but they have an issue of accuricey they are not that great a 5 inch circle at 100 yards if i remember but the other one that they have the mini 30 is cheep on ammo

I have had one in .223 since 85 and have put thousands of rounds though it without any problems. Granted the rifle is not a tack driver, but accurate enough for what I need. Magazines are higher than AR types and harder to find, but I think Ruger is now selling 30 round magazines to everyone, not just LEO.

Unless you reload your own, I wouldn't bother with it. The 6.8spc round was designed by a Specops guy in order to gain more lethal energy than the issued .223 round, yet not have to deal with the recoil issues of the .308. He basically ended up compromising with the 6.8 being kind of like a .270.....

I have a mini 30 bought it when 7.62x39 ammo was 69.00 1000 rounds,I also have a 7.62x39 upper for my AR15 same reason ammo was cheap. That ain't the case nowadays.I have taken deer with my mini 30 and at 200 yards hit where I was shooting

I like the idea of the 6.8, and like my .223 Minis. As for ammo availability, fewer places may stock 6.8, but at those places, in my area, it IS IN STOCK, when they are sold out of .223/5.56.
If I did not already have three Browning lever rifles in .308, and our household Winchester '94 .30 WCF, I would probably have already purchased a Mini in 6.8 SPC. Right now, though, that niche is not a priority.
A little more complex than that. The 6.8 was designed to get a 6+ mm round to fit into an AR-15 mag well. Like the 6.5 Grendel, it's a compromise of capability and space/capacity. If I were to purchase a 6.8 SPC rifle, it would be in an AR platform. That said, if I'm going to get an AR in a non-5.56 NATO caliber, I'm going to go all out and get a .270 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, or 6.5x47 Lapua, all of which will fit nicely in an AR-10 mag well.
Does anybody know if the price of Ruger mags has gone down any?
