How to tell if barrel is rifled, will take chokes, etc?

Going to buy a HD gun and I have my eye on a Mossberg 590 from a local dealer.

How do I tell if the barrel is rifled or not? I assume on a 590 it won't be. I want to shoot slugs out of it. So I would buy rifled slugs correct? Sabot slugs are for rifled barrels yeah?

Also, will that gun accept chokes?

If you want to tell if the barrel is rifled, get a look at the inside. If it is smooth then it is not rifled, if you see grooves then it is rifled, you'll know it when you see it. If you look down the barrel to ascertain this make CERTAIN that it is unloaded and leave the action open. You should be able to see the rifling just by looking at the end of the barrel from an angle without having to look straight down it. It is most likely smoothbore, especially if it is one of the short 18 1/2" long barrels.

    20" barrel. I'm 99.99% certain it's smooth...but being a newbie to guns I wasn't sure.

    Answer to questions:

1 Make sure it is not loaded and look down the bbl or use your finger. (see above)

    2. Yes.

    3. Yes.

    4. NO. I have never seen a 590 that does. Multiple chokes are mostly "for the birds", a 590 is for defense so it doesn't need them.
I havenít heard any of the journalists who volunteered to be waterboarded asking to have their fingernails wrenched out with pliers, or electrodes attached to their genitals.

    + 1 ^^

    Correct across the board.
Even if this were a turkey intent and setup shotgun to be used double duty for HD one would remove the choke when the gun is not in the field and is stowed in the home.
