Post What rifle do I buy? Rem. 700, M1A SOCOM, Mini-14 or Lee-Enfield SMLE?

Sorry for the long title, but I was really hoping to get some expert advice on which rifle to purchase. The rifles I am currently interested in are the:
    -Remington 700 SPS
    -Armory M1A SOCOM II
    -Ruger Mini-14
    -Lee-Enfield SMLE
I have been interested in long range rifles for a long time, and have only now wished to own one. If anyone could tell me the best of the four in regards to:
    -Price
    -Accuracy
    -Fun to shoot
    -Reliability
    -Ammunition Cost

    That would be spectacular.

    Much Appreciated,
    Antiman1337

For me, it's really going to come down to primary purpose...
Do I want small groups at 600-1000 yards? I'd go for the Remington in .308(cheaper than the .300 mag but can still "reach out and touch someone").
Do I want a dual purpose medium range(around 300-400yrds) and can be used effectively for CQ as well? Then I'm go for the SocomII...wish I had the money to burn on one myself.
Do I want shorter range(150yrds tops), cheaper bullets, and worse accuracy? ...go with the Ruger...
Do I want a piece of history, albeit heavy, but still have an effective range out to 500yrds, but not really good for CQ? Go for the SMLE

    +1 on what packinnova said

I don't think you can buy a Ruger Mini-14 or M1A in New York anyway

Really, if I had the scratch, the Socom II would be in my closet right now. Oh, and if you should ever need a place to store it, feel free to ship it my way.

    Thanks for the replies.

Also, do any of you know where to get .308 rounds in bulk? I'm under the impression that the M1A chambers the .308 round?

Dollar for dollar, the Enfields kick serious butt. All the other choices are much, much more expensive. If the particular Enfield has a decent bore, with similar sighting setup, it will shoot as well as the very best of them.

What in your mind would a decent bore be? Much Appreciated.

I voted SOCOM since I want one & already have the others......

Only piece of advice I have is STAY AWAY FROM THE MINI-14! The accuracy SUCKS! The only reason I still own the one I have is that it's an early version stainless with the factory folding stock. It hasn't been shot in years because I hate not being able to hit anything with it. (trust me...it's really bad...)

I have a SOCOM II and its a great rifle. It is a fairly heavy rifle though, I use it mainly on a bench, but man I can bang that gong every time with it.

Each of these rifles fits into a VASTLY different niche than the others.

The ONLY long-range precision rifle in the bunch is the Remington 700.

NEW Mini-14s, those with serial numbers starting with "580-" or higher, will be MUCH more likely to be accurate than earlier ones. but, nobody can accuse the Mini of being a long-range rifle. I like my 580-series Minis very much, and consider them VERY useful, but they are close-range weapons.

The M1A SOCOM is NOT a beginner's M1A/M-14, according to a guy whose opinion I respect. He says to start with a full-length rifle. I have no M1A/M-14 rifles, so cannot speak from experience. Another friend, whose wisdom I also trust, says the 18" length is really good, and OK for starting out.

SMLEs are all over the place in quality and accuracy. Keep in mind these are older weapons, who have passed through many hands before yours. Do much research, take some deep breaths breaths before buying the first ones that come along, and you should do OK. I have looked into SMLEs, but never bought one, largely because I am a lefty with long guns, and my only bolt rifle thus far is built for lefties. The SMLE is probably the best manually-operated BATTLE/FIGHTING rifle in the world. I will almost certainly buy a few, eventually.
