Set me straight...is Steel Shot the same as Slug?

No.
Shot is multiple projectiles, a slug is a single projectile.
They'll be clearly labeled... i.e. 8 oz shot (not acceptable at your range) or sabot slug or rifled slug, etc.

No not the same. Slugs will come in a box of 5.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help - I figured there would be a clear distinction on the box but I thought maybe 'slug' was a slang term
Autofx,
Welcome to the board!
As a self professed newb it would be doing yourself a disservice to not fully understand your weapon system of choice, shotgun, _and_ it's applicable ammunition.
You can learn everything functional there is to know about shotgun ammunition, which are called 'shells', by going to the following educational link toward the subject matter:

I believe the military buck shot sold at MidWayUSA is steel shot. It is the stuff in the brown box.
