Man that sucks, and at such a young age. Did you clean the factory gunk out and give it a good cleaning before shooting it?
I'd contact S&W first thing and see what they can do for you.

Yikes! I saw a similar thing happen to a Glock once.
First things first, are you OK?
I'd say first stop, contact S&W.

Contact Remmington too. There's at least as much chance this was an ammo problem as a gun defect. Save any other ammo from the same bandoleer/case that you've got too.

I'm good thanks for asking.
I sill have the ammo... LOL about 550 rounds left. Like i said.. 27th round.
Man, I shot a crapload of rounds in the army. I never, ever seen this happen. Even the Marine old timer @ the range was like WTHeck! When he inspected the weapon he was shocked as hell to see it was a S&W firing Remington ammo.
Was far as the gunk i had her nice and lubed up with some CLP.
Man, i was waiting for this rifle for 6 months... this sucks.

Call S&W - Refer them to this thread in DefensiveCarry to view your pictures. That way they can see first hand that there are about 30,000 DC forum members curious to see if and how they resolve the issue.
Regarding S&W ~ They normally have extremely good customer service so be polite when you call even though you are probably obviously and understandably upset.
Don't mess with the firearm now as for all intent and purposes there is nothing you can do to save it and their technical people will likely want to see it exactly as is.
Glad that you were not hurt.
Reminder for you newbie shooters...Always wear eye protection! Now you can see why.
It's one thing to lose a firearm. It's another whole different thing to lose an eye.

Addition:
Take good crisp, clear close up photos of the damage before you send it off anywhere.
Keep those photos in a safe place.
Get statements Dated and signed by any witnesses that saw what actually happened.
Hopefully you won't need them but, you might need them for small claims court if nobody is willing to resolve the issue outside of court.
Don't give up. Somebody is responsible and it is very likely not you.

were you firing 5.56 ammo in a 223 chamber, there are several warnings about firing the hotter pressure 5.56 military rounds in a 223 chamber.Just something that came to mind

There was another guy on this forum had his M&P AR 15 blow up first range trip and S&W claimed it was the ammo.Last I knew he still hadn't got any satisfaction

If you're referring to this thread, he did in fact get a new rifle from Smith and Wesson.
