Truck Rifles

Here is a different spin on things. What is yor favorite "Truck Rifle?" I am not talkinng yor SHTF rifle , I am talking about the one you tote around the most. For instance, If you were to go look in my dad's truck right now you would either find a .223 Win m-70, or a Ruger 77 in .284. In mine you would either find my 10-22, or my 8mm Kraut Skout. How about y'all? Oh, yeah my missus has an AR, But truck rifle is a Marlin30-30.

Up untill I retired in Dec-05 this one rode in the trunk/truck always, except for a short 2 mos I got stupid and sold it, and bought it back.

ammo either 180 hardcast or 200 grain Bearthooth handloads,in a butt cuff, mag normaly loaded with 145 grain winchester silver tips or 180 grain Buffaloe Bore

While "working" as a guide in Maine my beater/truck gun was a old 8mm Mauser. I won it in a raffel at a sportsmen's club. The outside wuz crappola but the bbl was new looking(?). I had the bbl chopped to 18"at the "local" gunshop and a Firesight of the proper height installed. The rear sliding sight worked perfect in this setup.

This weapon rode in the back of the front seat in a so-so old gun case. My nornal day was 25-50 miles on the unpaved logging roads. Some days closer to 100 miles. This weapon was used to dispatch wounded(by vech. or hunter)bear,deer,and moose.

I also called this weapon my "master key". I carried 50rds of the FMJ military stuff to open locked gates in case some do-do would lock me behind a gate at the head of a road. Also 50rds. of 200gr. for animals.

I still have this weapon but now it lives in one of my safes for added weight.

Being a city boy now,I don't carry a long gun in my truck anymore.-------

I like the Winchester M94 Trapper model...the straight stock carbine in .30-30. Hard to beat. But depending on where you live, I'd also be just as comfortable with a Kel-Tec Folding carbine (Sub-2000) in the shorty forty. Easy to put in a nice nondescript bag that doesn't scream "gun." Keep three or four aftermarked Scherer 29rd stick mags and you've got some nice compact firepower that won't let you down. Accurate out to maybe 150 meters.

Another 16" M94 Trapper here, mine in .45 Colt. I keep 50-100 rounds of 255gr lead "plinkers" and 50 300gr HOT reloads with it. Accurate out to 150 or so yards with a Lyman tang sight, and overall a very handy little package. Doesn't scream "evil black rifle" to anyone, either.

A lot of folks carry some sort of milsurp rifle, which makes sense as well. An SKS or M38 would seem to be great choices.

The only near permanent rifle passenger is Marlin Papoose - dismantled. mainly keep that along for occasional recreational plinking but also wounded critter despatching etc.

For a centerfire if I have one along, probably one of the SKS's. Unfortunately in PA, tho I can carry a loaded handgun per my carry permit - no loaded rifles in truck here . Another option might be Camp 9 or 45 - or Storm - anything which can have a mag quickly inserted for quick use.

RSSZ, That 8mm of yours is cryin' because you don't play with it any more. I love mine and i use 180gn NoslerBT and IMR4064 . I have been working up a load for a 125gn Hornady for a friend. Hey Greg i bet that .223 H&R is a Sweeeetttt shooter. I have a friend who has one like yours with a 3-9 Leupold on it . It is extremly accurate . Now i am thinking of one just like it in.204 . Lot of lever gun being represented. I passed up a deal a few years ago on a m-94 in.45 Colt and have regretted it ever since. That particular model in .45LC Does'nt sit on the shelves for very long.

Sure is! I just dont like the twist ratio, it doesnt shoot pills over 55gr. very well. Although I never realy shot anything over that weight, so who knows:shrug:.
I had a great .22-250 that spent more time in the safe, than in the field. I shot way more ground hogs with the H&R single shot. Someday I should send the frame back to the factory, to get the trigger weight down. I am realy impressed by the Bushnell glass too, I.M.H.O. its just as nice as Leupold, only cheaper.

Just talking about this is making me home sick. I wish there is Groundhogs here in Florida.
