    Mossberg 500 -20 in. barrel /range & pattern?

What kind of range and pattern will the 20 inch barrel produce shooting 00 buck? Is there a link somewhere with this kind of info? I've only shot 12 .gauge from an 18" barrel at a target 30 ft. away in the past, does the extra 2 inches make a big difference? I'm no hunter, this is strictly my carry in the truck while traveling SD gun. (haven't had time to shoot it yet, 120 deg. outside) Thanks.

There's no set answer to your questions. As long as it doesn't have a rifled barrel, at 10 yards with 00 buck, you're going to blow a big, nasty hole in whatever you're shooting at. The only true way to determine your pattern is to shoot the gun with the ammo you intend to use. Remember, different ammo can pattern differently in different guns.

A lot of maximum effective range will depend on your pattern. If you have a 10" pattern at 20 yards, you can expect it to be 20" at 40 yards and so on. Remember, with 00 buck, you only have 9-12 pellets to work with so your chances of scoring a hit decrease as yardage increases, even though the pellets may still contain lethal energy. With 00 buck, your shotgun will be lethal at much greater range than you could successfully claim self defense.

If the barrel is rifled, all bets are off.

At SD ranges they won't be that much difference ,but you still need to pattern your gun with your HD loads so you know what kinda pattern it throws at different ranges anyways

My 20", smoothbore, cylinder choked Mossberg barrel will pattern 3-6" at about 10 yards, with 00 buck, depending on manufacturer.

Remington copper-coated 3" patterns tightest, Wolf patterns loosest (if that's a word...).

Federal low-recoil patterned at about 4", so that's what I go with (that Remington stuff HURTS if you don't tuck up tight!).

My SD 870 w/ 20" smooth bore shots about 8-10 in. group at 10 yrd. Anything past that stops being SD and starts being hunting!

Pattern your chosen load in your gun. That's the best way to be sure.

I am now a big fan of the Federal "Flite Control" loads. After I patterned them in my personal guns and the gun we keep loaded behind the gunshop counter, I use it exclusively for my SD / HD / SHTF ammo. From a 20" IC barrel, it will put every pellet into a coffee cup sized pattern at 60', the length of our range. We patterned a bunch of different brands and shot sizes for the shop gun, and the Federal was the clear winner.

+1 to all the above. The only way to accurately tell it to pattern the gun.

Yup, 18" barrel at 10 yds Rem was about 10", Fed Flite-Control was the size of my bore. Pattern your gun. I know too many people who can hit a man sized target at 50 yds with a handgun to say "past 10 yds is hunting".

Pick the ammo you wish to use and then go out a pattern your own gun. Ammo makes a huge difference. I shoot Federal LE low recoil ammo with Flight Control. It's the tighest pattern I've shot so far.
