Did you get any ammo with it? The internet is your friend. It won't tell you everything, but it will get you in the ballpark. I had a '98 model Argentine Mauser in 7.65 (.311)caliber years ago. Rather punishing to shoot too many with a steel butt plate but nostalgic just the same and always drew attention at the range.
Actually he had 2 rds and i shot one just to make sure it would work dont know if i was that brave or that stupid all the serial numbers match all over the gun, anyway to tell how old it actually is??
Would 1891 get you close?anyway to tell how old it actually is??
Collecting and Shooting the 1891 Argentine Mauser - HISTORY
1891 Argentinian Mauser Leading the Next Inquisition
Just a start. Have fun with it. The history alone is worth getting to know your firearm better and give credit where credit is due.
The model 1891 is a great rifle for just about any normal non dangerous game in North America. It holds the rounds straight rather than staggered like all later dated mausers have. I have one that was fixed up a while ago. It was not much $$$, setting me back a coouple of hundred. Get a headspace guage set or have a gunsmith check it out for you. I use Priv Partisan ammo and have never had an issue with it. I bought a 1,000 rounds from Graf & Sons - The Reloading Authority for not much money, considering it is not something in surplus inventories these days.
When you buy ammo, just make sure you get the correct stuff. It's Argentine 7.65x53. There are some that are close to that, just a heads up.
Better to die on your feet, than to live on your knees.
Have one of these rifles myself. Fine piece of history. Picked up
some surplus Argentine ammunition for it. Also found 5 round
stripper clips for fast loading!
Had gunsmith check it out - said bore was dark and rough due to
use of corrosive primer ammunition used. Fixed bent magazine
spring. Cleaned bore.
Now need place to shoot it!
